Hej! We're Seb and Alex: a 30-something couple originally from South Africa, now living in small-town Sweden with our very adorable Finnish Lapphund, Sanna. We're based just outside the town of Älmhult, where we both work for IKEA in creative roles.

Our home is a lovely little 90m2 villa from the 1930s with more than a few projects on the go at any time – admittedly, we sometimes bite off a little more than we can chew! :D For this reason, we're looking for an extra pair of hands to help us out in 2023, so we can finally tick off some items on our to-do list (and, as a bonus, hopefully meet some great people in the process!).

We count ourselves very lucky to live in a beautiful part of the world, with an abundance of nature right on our doorstep. We try to enjoy the best of Swedish life in every season: from long walks in spring, to kayaking in nearby Möckeln lake during summer, foraging for mushrooms in the autumn and enjoying cosy moments in the long, dark Swedish winter.

Älmhult, as the birthplace of IKEA, is home to a large international community, so it would also be a chance to meet plenty of interesting creative people from all around the world.

We both speak English as our native language if that is something you would like to improve. We would also gladly host Swedish speakers, so that our Swedish gets better too :)

Seb is a skilled designer and craftsman who would happily share his knowledge about anything related to wordwork/DIY etc.

Sanna, our dog, is always up for a game of fetch, long walks in the forest or a chance to show off her latest tricks :)

    Help

We are looking for someone who is willing to roll up their sleeves and put in some elbow grease for more physically-demanding projects around our house and garden, such as:
    - Scraping and painting the exterior trim of our house (will require being on a skylift or tall ladder)
    - Moving and spreading loads of gravel for our driveway and in the garden
    - Landscaping of our front lawn (adding soil, levelling, compacting, seeding etc) and building a new flower bed
    - Digging up invasive weeds from the bottom of our garden
    - Helping us to demolish an old, dilapidated brick shed

    Accommodation

You'll be living with us in our two-bedroom, one-bathroom villa. You'll get your own very cosy room (also Seb's office, so he might need to work there sometimes), but will share the small downstairs bathroom with us.

In terms of meals, we generally have a cold breakfast of overnight oats, something quick and easy for lunch, and a hot meal for dinner, where we sit together. Healthy snacks like fruit will also be available. We're big food lovers who enjoy spices and interesting flavours from around the world, but are happy to accommodate any specific dietary requirements.

We both work from home at least a few days a week (Alex most of the time) so we'll generally be around to give instructions, offer support or have a chat :)

On your time off, feel free to enjoy the nearby nature. There are at least 5 marked walking trails in the nearby vicinity, including Taxås, Höö and Linnés Råshult. In summer (June-August) it's also great to take a dip at any of the nearby lakes.

We have a car that you are welcome to use if we're not using it and you have a license. Otherwise, there is a bus stop about 200m from our front door, with +- hourly buses into Älmhult during weekdays.

In Älmhult you'll find the IKEA Museum (well worth a visit!) as well as a few restaurants and shops. If you're into saunas, you can enjoy the sauna on the lake at Sjöstugans Camping for 190kr.

In Älmhult you also have hourly trains to Malmö, Lund and Copenhagen, if you're in need of some bigger city life :)
Stockholm is about a 3.5 hour train ride away.
