  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We encourage you to tell us what it is that you are interested in and hope to learn/experience during your stay. You can do this when writing to us, but also when you arrive at the farm. We will do our best to provide you with opportunities to advance your learning/experience accordingly. The farm manager, James, is a wealth of knowledge and when he can find the time in his busy work days, he is passionate to share what he knows with those who are keen to learn.

Through this cultural exchange you will gain an insight into what it is like to live in harmony with the land and natures cycles. You will learn about small-scale market gardening and organic farming practices. You will also learn about the work required to maintain a property/farm.

  • Help

    Help

Being an extremely busy small-scale certified organic vegetable farm, we do most tasks by hand. We are looking for helpers who show great initiative, are quick learners and have some knowledge/experience/interest in small-scale market gardening to help us out on the farm. We require volunteers to have good English fluency so that work tasks and expectations can be easily communicated. We priorities volunteers who can demonstrate relevant skills/experience (so please provide info on this when messaging us).

Some of the tasks you will be asked to help out with during your stay will include:
    - Garden bed preparation
    - Help collecting materials for/turn our compost piles
    - Harvesting and processing produce to be sold at the markets (2 mornings a week)
    - Weeding, whipper snipping/brush cutting around the property
    - Occasional building/maintenance jobs (for those with carpentry experience)
    - If you have graphic design, photography or social media skills these may also be put to use to help us build our small farming business’s brand awareness and online presence.

We aim to have 1-3 helpers staying with us at any given time.

The work hours: 6hrs per day, 4 mornings per week. You will begin with the sunrise in the morning and work until lunch (with a short breakfast break mid-morning). You get Thursdays and Weekends off, however you are expected to do 1hr of house cleaning/maintenance each week.

Length of stay: We prioritise volunteers who can commit to a minimum of 4 weeks. This is because we find that it often takes at least 3 weeks for you to get trained up and start working like a pro. We will NOT consider hosting people for 1 or 2 weeks.

Physical fitness: Farming requires you to be working out in the elements (sun, rain, cold, hot), so some physical endurance is a must. We're not looking for top athletes, but if you have any physical issues such as sensitive back or knees, this experience won't suit you.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Accommodation: You will be living in what we affectionately refer to as the ‘Wwoofers shed’, a private self-contained renovated farm shed for volunteers. There are 3 bedrooms, a large living room, a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom with a hot shower and compost toilet, and an outdoor laundry with a washing machine.

Although we do our best to ensure you are sharing the space with others, depending on demand this may not always be the case.

We cater for privacy, so there is 1 person per room, or two at most if you have come with a friend. One room has a queen size bed, reserved for couples of any gender. The other rooms have single beds. We provide you with bedding (but you are also welcome to bring your own).

There is no TV or wifi so you will need to use your phone's data to get online. Phone reception is limited to 1-3 bars of service on the property. Reception varies depending on what provider your phone plan is with. In saying this, our recent volunteers have not struggled to connect.

Food: We will do a weekly food shop to provide you with essential food items (i.e. basic breakfast and dinner pantry staples, milk and tofu). You will also be provided with plenty of surplus vegetables from the farm (i.e. veg we don’t sell due to imperfections or veg that comes back from the markets). You are welcome to eat meat but you'll need to supply it yourself.

We will supply you with toilet paper, cleaning products, laundry detergent and hand soap as needed.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

By car, Byron Bay is 12 mins, Mullumbimby is 10 mins, Ballina is 30 mins and the Gold Coast is 1hr. There are so many beautiful beaches, waterholes and rainforest trails to explore in the local area during your free time if you have a car.

If you don’t have a car:
We will pick you up on arrival in Byron, so don't worry if you don't have a car.

Public transport in the area is pretty limited and taxis are very expensive. However, we do have a couple of bicycles you can get on and go places (Byron Bay is about a 40 minute bike ride from the farm).

When we are heading off the farm and have spare seats in the car, we will offer you a ride. We also go to Byron Bay Farmers Market every Thursday morning and Bangalow Farmers Market every Saturday morning so you can get a ride into town with us then.

Although there are plenty of sights and experiences available in the local area to keep you busy, you might like to take the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the magic of the property… go for walks along the lane, bird watch, journal, paint or even learn to play the guitar in your free time!
