Description
About us: We live in a beautiful old renovated house surrounded by approx. 5000 square metres of fantastic garden, pasture and orchard with big beautiful trees. There are fourteen of us 😁: us, our 2 girls (11/14), 3 cats, 2 adult sheep, two adolescent lambs and recently also three gerbils. 😊
We live away from the hustle and bustle in a small village in the countryside, 5 minutes from the Baltic Sea by car/15 minutes by bike (which you can borrow) at the Camino circular route (caminohaderslev.dk). A bus stop is less than 5 minutes away, it takes half an hour by bus to Haderslev, a quarter of an hour by car. But whenever we go, we will offer you a ride into town or back, Flensburg is also an option.
You can take wonderful walks on natural peaceful beaches or swim, cycle past horses, Galloway cattle and small churches on small country roads and simply relax, because it is quiet and idyllic here, pure nature and country life. The North (Wadden) Sea is 1 hour away by car (Rømø) as is the German town Flensburg and you can also go on relaxing day trips, e.g. to the small island of Årø from the small harbour in Årøsund, not far from here. There are a lot of second hand shops around, we can take you there. Nearest train station: Vojens, altern.Kolding. There are many different bus routes from Haderslev, e.g. an Flixbus to Copenhagen or Flensburg/Germany. We can pick you up at the bus or train station as we live just over 10 km south-east of Haderslev.
We have moved to Denmark (from Germany) almost four years ago, because we fell in love with our charming house and garden, the area, better schools and the less stressful way of living in our little village close to nature. But we could really do with some help now, as those were exciting and very demanding years at the same time....and the house has greedily eaten up our resources as old houses usually do.
I am creating a rose garden, that I would like to open to the public one day. In the garden you will find many historic roses that will be preserved for future generations. I also try to establish an organic vegetable garden, with varying success.😉 The sheep need fences…we keep them as pets and malfunctioning lawnmowers 😂 and they are a great joy, bringing life back into the village, people think they are “hyggeligt“. 😍 But they are a lot of work without permanent fencing. Paint is needed in several places, brick foundations for a greenhouse and veranda would be a dream come true.
You are welcome to spend quality time with us if you want to, e.g. we enjoy card and board games.
The room is free next year (maybe beginning of December too) but otherwise fully booked this year.
I am happy to provide more information and fotos beforehand or in a videocall.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
You will be welcomed into our family. We have lived in different countries ourselves and are happy to share our experiences, hear about yours and show you around as much as possible (keeping in mind that we are not on holidays and are a family with two kids and a lot of animals 😉).
Learning opportunities: practice English or learn German, the kids are also fluent in Danish, I am still learning.
And a lot about gardening, cats and sheep...
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.

Help
We expect 4 hrs a day/ 2 days off per full week -or 3 hours only, if the task is physically very demanding.
In late winter and early springtime we muck out the sheep's little houses, clear and cut away branches, build fences and gates or put in metal borders in the rose garden (incl. measuring), plant roses etc. Later in spring we start weeding (as I never use pesticides/weedkiller) and prepare the garden for the season.
In winter and springtime you can experience the rugged Scandinavian charm of the coastline (comparatively mild down here + you have the beach to yourself), an ideal time if you enjoy solitude in nature. But the kitchen is heated with a huge Finnish fireplace, so it’s warm and cosy inside. 😉
When it's raining and we can't work outside, there can be small repair tasks done inside the house or outbuilding or maybe some painting indoors, e.g. painting a small room and a little cellar with chalk paint or other renovation help. If you don't mind cleaning, tidying or other household chores, that would also be an alternative. There is always something to do in a big house and garden. But we will talk about it beforehand to find out what way you can/want to help.
Alternatively we would be happy to host people who are skilled in crafts or who can put up fencing for the sheep (game fence) or build gates or rose arches, paint garden furniture, give my small vintage caravan a check over and do some repairs if needed etc. Paint is needed in several places, brick foundations for a greenhouse and veranda would be a dream come true.
Good outdoor clothing is necessary. It doesn't get very hot or cold here, but it can be windy, as we live not far from the Baltic Sea.
We would like to take turns cooking, but only if you are happy to. We enjoy trying dishes from other countries. Everybody helps to clean up after, which is not part of your work hours, as is only part of the cooking since you are eating the meal yourself too.

Accommodation
You can enjoy the privacy of a nice, bright and clean room (with a big cottage style window to the garden and a double bed). We will provide bed linen, and towels too if needed. We share our meals with you incl. one warm meal/day. We don’t have the time to shop special foods or make extra dishes e.g. vegan, halal meat (1 vegetarian is ok- but only if you take over part of the cooking). We use organic meat for cooking, e.g. from the Galloway cattle farm here, who have grazed on the meadows around our village and in the coastal and bird protection area at the Baltic Sea nearby. We don't expect you to eat every meal together with us, e.g. we don't manage breakfast and every lunch together on weekdays. But of course we will provide the food.
An extra bed for a child is possible, we can only accommodate two adults if they are happy to share the double bed. You are welcome to share the large kitchen and our big downstairs bathroom with a lovely shower.
We expect you to clean up after yourself (but of course not the whole house).
What else ...
No smoking in or directly next to the house, no parties or extra guests, no drugs, bad language and excessive drinking, as children live here.
