Description
Update 2026: Our main project for this summer is building a wooden cabin in the garden (timber frame, wood-fibre boards and insulation). We would really appreciate some help with this — especially from someone with construction experience.
Otherwise, we still need help with stacking wood in the forest and possibly with some other renovation work around the house.
My name is Petra. Together with my husband Honza, we live in the small village of Nahoruby, situated in beautiful hilly countryside close to the Vltava River, about 60 km south of Prague. We are both around 45 years old.
We live in an old stone house that is part of a family farm; my parents live in the house next to us. We have a big garden with lots of vegetables and fruit. It is a permaculture-style garden, and I am very fond of it and always try to make it more fertile and productive. I grow my own seeds and select resistant varieties. I also have some knowledge and recipes for preserving what the garden provides.
We are vegetarians. Honza likes playing airsoft and bass guitar, and driving an old military truck (see photos) that we reconstructed ourselves. Besides gardening, I am fond of foreign languages, swimming, art, and travelling (more in the past — nowadays I mostly go to the seaside, which I love). I also enjoy reading.
We both like hiking, making fires, music, fun, spending good time with friends, relaxing in nature, and spirituality. We have two small dogs.
We spend quite a lot of time maintaining our land — cleaning the forest, fighting brambles and nettles, making firewood, cutting grass, planting trees, renovating house, and reconstructing or building various things.
Together we reconstructed an old military camper trailer that we keep in a valley on a meadow by a stream among forests, about 2 km from the village. We feel very lucky to have this piece of land and spend quite a lot of time there.
Last year we reconstructed another similar camper trailer together with a legendary 50-year-old Praga V3S truck, with the aim of creating extra accommodation for guests (and also for fun ;).
There are many dry pine trees in our forest, so we have plenty of wood for making fires.
The food we make is rather simple but tasty, with lots of fresh or preserved vegetables and fruit from our garden, depending on the season. As vegetarians, we do not buy meat, but we make sure the food we cook contains enough protein.
Anything regarding your stay can be discussed and precised in advance.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
There is a possibility to learn something about permaculture gardening, seed saving, preserving and storing fruit and vegetables, and making fruit wine. We also enjoy exchanging travel, cultural, and life experiences, and practising languages.
There is a female Trappist monastery nearby, where the liturgy is partly sung in Latin.
Sometimes in summer we visit alternative music festivals, and you could join us. Friends may also occasionally come to visit.
Help
We need help with work in the forest — mostly bringing logs out to paths where they can be loaded onto a trailer, and piling branches into heaps.
There may also be construction work, woodworking, and digging.
Possible tasks include raking cut grass, weeding, moving compost, painting a long wooden fence, and picking fruit.
On rainy days, there may be some indoor renovation work, such as grinding rusty metal door frames and painting them, whitewashing the cellar, or attic renovation work.

Accommodation
Accommodation is in a small non-insulated wooden cabin in our garden, with a single bed, table, chair, electricity, and a nice view to the east. There is an outdoor dry toilet. Depending on the season, you can use either a solar shower in the garden or a shower in the house. Use of the washing machine and Wi-Fi in our home is also possible.
Accommodation is also possible in our military truck campervan parked in the valley about 2 km away, where we also have another campervan, surrounded by nature. There is basic camping-style equipment for cooking on a fire or gas stove, washing dishes, and storing food, as we use it ourselves. There is a stream nearby and a camping shower. You can make a campfire there every day.
What else ...
There is a lot of nature around and marked hiking trails. There are also some nice viewpoints over the rivers.
It is possible to go swimming in the Vltava River (Slapy Lake), about 4 km away.
Transport to and from Prague by public transport takes around 2 hours.
Our recreation/camping place is a great spot to relax with a book and a drink, either in the shade of a tree or in the sun, listening to the sound of the water flowing, birds singing.
