    Description

Come and join us on the beautiful Taranaki coast. We are four households who are all closely related (a whānau - extended family) and live on our ancestral land, Waokena, 4 kms south of Hāwera, Taranaki. There are three homes on our land, and an office and communal space. Our property is 57 hectares, most of which is leased but we still have lots to do planting riparian areas all over the area. Our papakāinga area where we all live is 3 hectares. We are setting up permaculture/hua parakore style gardens. The fourth home is in town.

We feel staying with us would better suit two people travelling together as we are friendly but very busy and there is not a lot of entertainment in this area. You will definitely have many opportunities to learn more about how we as Māori live and we will do our best to introduce you to things Māori in our region.

All of the older generation (four of us are over 50) have lived overseas and travelled extensively so we love to meet others from overseas. We have children lively in two of our homes on site and in the home in town. They are aged between 8-18.

Our account is managed by Patina, our Whānau Trust chair, who has hosted workawayers when she lived in Kāpiti. You will likely by Maakere, Patina's sister who has a spare bedroom. The other two homes on our papakāinga are only a few steps away so you will get to know everyone and help out anywhere on site.

We live as a papakāinga, an extended family (whānau) on ancestral land. We are multi generational. There are three homes on our property, an office block and a large communal area. We use the communal area a lot in summer and for special occasions when the wider whānau return home. We also have a home in town which is part of our communal family living.

We are happy to share our experience of te ao Maori, the Maori world with you. We speak Māori as much as possible especially to our children, some of whom attend kura kaupapa Māori - schools that teach in te reo Māori (the Māori language) and according to Māori customs and values. Aroha is a kaiako (teacher) at the school. We are all involved in one way or many in the revitalisation of our culture and language.

We are super friendly and you will feel like one of the family!

You will have a bedroom with a double bed and built in wardrobe at Maakere's house. There is an attached sitting room which has a foldaway bed as well. Her bathroom is small so you can use the shower in the office across the paddock if you prefer.

The living is rustic but the fireplace keeps the house warm and there is a heater in your room.
