This is a community initiative managed solely through a team of passionate volunteers for Hiliamaetaniha village, a friendly community of approximately 1,800 people near Lagundri bay in the south of Nias Island, Indonesia.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to live in a traditional house in a traditional village, a truly authentic cultural experience few foreigners have access to.
In addition to the opportunity to learn about Indonesian languages and culture, volunteers will also be minutes drive from some of the best surf in the world, and close enough to the tourist areas that they can partake in more modern western comforts whenever they feel the need.
There are opportunities for excursions to lesser known areas, such as waterfalls, hidden surf spots, and beautiful beaches. Traditional style BBQs with local families and many other unforgettable cultural opportunities are readily available.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Volunteers will be teaching English to the local children of the traditional village of Hiliamaetaniha, South Nias Island, Indonesia. Children are aged from around 6 to 13 years old.
You may teach 3 days a week or more, for two or 3 hours at a time. Classes are currently held in an open air room on the beach of Lagundri Bay.
In return, volunteers receive discounted surf lessons and rentals and a truly authentic cultural experience.
We have a beach front volunteer house with 3 rooms that accomodates 3 volunteers at a time in Lagundri bay. Just a walk away from the surf!
During their time off volunteers can surf (or learn to surf!) on some of the best breaks in the world, soak in numerous hot springs, chill on the beach, party in the tourist area or take off and explore one of the other many slices of tropical paradise that are just around the corner.

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
