Description
My husband and I have built our retirement home beside the Salish Sea on Galiano Island in BC, Canada. Located mid-island at Retreat Cove Farms, our waterfront land looks across to SaltSpring Island and has low bank access to the ocean. We enjoy kayaking and hiking the forest trails on this Canadian southern gulf island, and I look forward to helping you explore this island paradise. The summer weather is delightfully warm, but not too hot, and the fresh ocean air cools us at night.
We are now landscaping and developing gardens and could use some help with a variety of projects such as: weeding and watering the gardens, creating more garden beds, splitting and stacking wood, weed-wacking the grounds, creating trails through the woods, and generally beautifying the grounds. We have a lovely guest cabin to accommodate our workaway guests and look forward to hosting you on what we consider to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Galiano Island is one 55 minute ferry ride from Tsawwassen, which is the ferry terminal accessible by rapid transit and bus from Vancouver.

I am a environmental educator (PhD) and my husband is a therapeutic counsellor, so we're interesting people to talk to about the natural world, climate change and current political affairs. Together we will learn about setting up a hot compost bin, and how to make rocky/sandy soil more fertile. We have a solar power and rainwater catchment system to maximize sustainability that my husband can introduce you to. You'll also enjoy the satisfaction of creating beautiful gardens and experiencing life on the Canadian west coast Gulf Islands. I can also take you out kayaking to enjoy the local wildlife: seals, orcas, herons, otters, geese, bald eagles, etc.

Help
As stated above, we are now landscaping and developing gardens and could use some help with a variety of projects such as: weeding and watering the gardens, creating more garden beds, splitting and stacking wood, weed-wacking the grass, creating trails through the woods, and generally beautifying the grounds, and setting up a hot compost system.. If you have woodworking skills, we'd like your help building a 3'x3'x3' compost bin.

Accommodation
separate bedroom with a double bed and bathroom with a shower in the guest cottage which is adjacent to the main house. There is a small kitchen and covered deck where you can enjoy breakfast and snacks in private. We will prepare lunch and dinner that can be eaten either in the main house, on the grounds picnic style or in the guest cabin sitting room, as you desire. This position is good for one person or a couple.
What else ...
We can pick you up from the Galiano ferry terminal if you do not have a vehicle. On your time off we can introduce you to beautiful local trails and we can also drive you to nearby hiking trails that are more wild and wonderful (like Mt. Galiano, or Dyonesio Point or Montague Harbour. I'd be happy to take you out kayaking for a few hours during time off. And we'll take you to the Saturday market which has live music booths and food.
