We are a young couple trying to live an ethical and ecological life in the Bóbr river valley in Lower Silesia in a small village surrounded by woodland. We have a ninety seven year old house which we would like to renovate using natural materials in a way that is good for the enviroment. Around the house is a 1000 m2 garden which we manage without machinery, aiming to maximize both biodiversity and productivity in line with principles of regenerative agriculture. Grzegorz is a guitarist and sculptor from England and Sasha in an artist and cultural manager from Poland. We speak English, Polish and Spanish.

Help in the house
You can learn, or discover together with us, about various natural-building techniques and woodwork. You can learn how to garden without machinery, mow with a scythe, design a garden in line with permaculture, and discover a plethora of wild edible plants, as well as hear about te wonders of soil. It is also possible to learn and practice both English and Polish.
Culturally the house is mixed, with strong influences from both Polish and British culture. We have a network of interesting friends in the area who have moved to this area from many parts of Poland and the whole world.
Our village has a medieval tower-house, with the oldest secular frescos and oldest preserved wooden beams in Poland. There are various events at the tower and a weekly farmer's market. Not far from Siedlęcin (the village), an hour's walk away, is the town of Jelenia Góra, where there are museums, art galleries, cafes, restaurants and bars.
The house is in a landscape park, an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Bóbr valley, densely forested, with steep meadows, streams and ravines. In the area there are some rocks where it is possible to climb. The geology is rich and diverse. In the wider wider surroundings there are several low mountain ranges, including the Karkonosze, which are a national park on both the Polish and Czech sides of the border. In all of the surrounding mountains there are many trails for walking and cycling, as well as many scenic roads.
On the bank of the Bóbr river in Siedlęcin there is a place for hiring kayaks. Further downstream there is a dam with a large lake where it's possible to hire a boat and sail.
We invite people willing to help with house renovation and gardening, as well as with general household chores. We are open for creative and artistically skilled travellers who wish to have a space for their artistic expressions in a sustainable way.
Our whole house is in need of renovation, and we are looking for people who can either help us with the renovation itself or to take care of the house and garden so that we can spend more time renovating.
In the garden help could include:
- mowing quietly with a scythe
- collecting herbs and vegetables for the kitchen
- sewing and planting
- pruning and weaving trees and hedges
- keeping the cat off the sand-pile
- deportation of slugs and snails
- completion of a stone construction
- rooting cuttings
Around the house we would appreciate help with:
- cooking delicious buttery meals (cheese always welcome)
- dusting and cleaning (without harmful chemicals)
- herding spiders
- sorting and tidying
- encouraging Grzegorz to leave his bed in the morning
- moving heavy objects
Regarding renovation we could do with help:
- electrical installations
- plastering with natural materials
- pointing brickwork with lime mortar
- laying a wooden floor
- constructing a rocket mass heater
- stripping and sanding wooden elements
- construction of wardrobes, cupboards, furniture and beds
- renovating furniture and upholstery
- ingenious engineering solutions
Specialists are welcome, but if you don't specialise in any of the above then we can show you what to do or we can learn together,
We have a big house with many rooms, although the conditions are somewhat rough and ready. There are single and double beds available in private rooms. The cat, when not out devastating the local ecosystem, is sometimes available to provide company while sleeping.
The kitchen and bathroom are shared. We prepare food in the house from basic ingredients trying to include plants from the garden, using a well-functioning gas cooker. We keep the kitchen knives sharpened. We don't eat meat but we are tolerant if you do. We like cheese.
We have running water, good for drinking. There is a shower with hot water.
We usually spend time in the kitchen or lounge, but the house is plenty big enough to find a quiet spot for solitude. There is wifi, and a big bookcase full of English and Polish-language literature.
There is space for a car.
The nearest town, Jelenia Góra is 7 km away. There is a public bus service.
