This was our first Workaway experience, and it taught us so much. Working with the animals is fun, but also (emotionally) challenging and tiring. Most of the animals have disabilities, so you shouldn't be put off by tasks like emptying their bladders and treating wounds. We quickly fell in love with the animals and adopted Ravi to our home in Germany. At the Balapitiya shelter, you have plenty of time between shifts (morning, noon and evening) to enjoy the nearby beach or even take a day off to go on city trips. We met some lovely people and would definitely recommend this experience!

Oh frabjous day, callooh callay, this dynamic duo came to stay (AND play! ;) What host doesn't love couples that are in sync and with the program?! Grace & Carter with their clever wit (and charming NZ accents) were a real treat and we were so glad that we made an exception to squeeze them in, making 6 of us working away and getting scads done, They were both quick studies and what they didn't know, they picked up immediately and threw themselves at it with gusto. Meal times were also quite lively as they got right in the groove with our seasoned crew, and made for some very spicy and diverse conversations. And you didn't have to ask them to pitch in on the communal errands as they were always there to do the dishes and tackle whatever else needed tending. Theses guys were like winning the Workaway lottery, and you'll be fortunate if you can cash in with their delightful presence!

It was a pleasure to host Rosalynn. She is charming and interesting in conversation and creative and adaptable in her approach to all tasks. She works in a focused, efficient way and delivers good results quickly, which we very much appreciated. She worked well with the other Workawayer, with whom she shared a room. They also enjoyed a three-day adventure together in the Pyrenees, and it was exciting to hear about it when they returned. Overall, we enjoyed sharing meals with her, enjoying music together, and exploring topics ranging from software development to travel experiences and family history. Hosting Rosalynn was worthwhile, and we recommend her as an interesting, creative person with a lot to give. May our paths cross again!

Maike and Daniel were lovely, kind people. They were super motivated, loved getting their hands dirty and were very thorough workers. They were clean and considerate. They clearly love to travel, and made the most of exploring our special area and the local sights.

My experience volunteering at the Ashram was absolutely amazing. The Ashram itself is a very special place, run by an inspiring and fun team. The schedule you follow as a volunteer truly leaves a positive impact on you. Personally, I really enjoyed the yoga an chanting classes, as they are so unique in the Ashram. Regarding the media work, Satyaki and Deepak are going to be your best friends. They are absolutely the best and have become very good friends of mine. They guide you in your tasks, but are also there to support you with anything else. I have much love for the Ashram and the media team and 10/10 would recommend this special place to anyone considering applying.

I spent two weeks and it was truly one of the highlights of my trip. Chris and Aly were really kind and when around alway ready to answer any questions. Son (the volunteer manager) was kind, attentive, and welcoming. He invited us to his home several times to meet his family! My experience was so positive largely thanks to him, thank you so much, Son! 😊 Everyone working on the farm is genuinely kind and caring towards the volunteers. My main tasks were helping with tours and tastings in both French and English (as it was the beginning of high season), as well as assisting with the order at the restaurant. When I arrived, I knew nothing about pepper, but the tours are easy to learn thanks to the help of the volunteers already there 🙂 The working hours are a bit longer than what is mentioned in the listing. Volunteers are at the shop from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, with one day off every five days (you need to ask for it yourself). Depending on the number of volunteers, it may be possible to arrange a morning or afternoon off. The listing could be updated to reflect this. Volunteers stay directly on the farm, usually with 2 to 5 volunteers at the same time. I highly recommend renting a scooter to fully enjoy your days off and the evenings. Without one, you might feel a bit stuck. Overall, this was a truly meaningful experience that really enriched my trip to Cambodia.

Lea's awesome and I am absolutely DEVASTATED to see them go. Sobbing as I write this. They were thoughtful, compassionate, looked out for me, was always willing and helpful (especially when i was too timid to ask). My dog and 30% of my cats loved Lea (the rest kind of just have bad taste to be honest) Lea's a great cleaner, super strong and a good friend if you need one. Lifting weights and lifting spirits with ease, that one. PLEASE COME BACK we need you!🥹

We loved having Nina stay with us! She's a real treasure and a wonderful young woman to have around. Very sweet, easy going, does fantastic work, be it cleaning, transplanting, weeding or anything else we asked her to do, she did it 100% and better. Nina only stayed one week with us, but we're already hoping that she'll be back one day. All the best on your journey Nina, Patricia & Gerard

As our first volunteer in Asia, we spend a really nice time with Kitty and his family. For 2 weeks we help him to renovate his hotel, which was just in front of the temples and next to the night market. He picked us up from the train station, and even our last day he kindly leave us at the bus station. Thanks to the family, we ate the best Thai dishes, everyday was a new experience. We loved it! Thank you so much for this opportunity, we will never forget it.

A big thank you to Christian for all his support during his time with us. He has truly been one of the best volunteers we’ve had at the academy so far. Christian connected very well with everyone, and our students, teachers, and staff are really grateful for his time, energy, and positive attitude. His contribution made a real difference, and it was a pleasure to have him as part of our community. We hope to meet more people like him in the future. And of course, whenever he wants to come back to Guatemala, the doors of the academy will always be open for him. He will always be welcome here.

Ada was excellent, always happy and ready to help with the work around our property. Worked unsupervised and willingly. Ada communicated well and shared information about her country and family. We enjoyed having you Ada and would be happy to host you again.

I spent nearly three months with this family, and it was a truly meaningful and enriching experience. They are a lovely, warm-hearted family with three children and two dogs. I stayed with them starting end of summer, a short fall period, and the beginning of winter, which allowed me to experience Whitehorse in very different seasons. There were many highlights during my stay. Snowmobiling was one of them, as well as experiencing extreme cold temperatures down to –38°C, seeing the Northern Lights and other beautiful light phenomena. Throughout all my plans and ideas, Alison and Adam were incredibly supportive. They always had an open ear, were reliable, structured, flexible, and genuinely kind people whom I truly grew close to. There was a great balance of action, beautiful moments and shared dinners. What I especially appreciated was the clear communication and structure. Meal times were communicated clearly, expectations were transparent, and I always felt taken seriously. I received trust – especially in the kitchen – and my time and effort were valued. Every single day, they expressed their gratitude in such a sincere and heartfelt way. I had space, appreciation, and freedom, which made the experience very comfortable and respectful. My tasks included meal preparation, chopping firewood, snow shoveling, household support like vacuum cleaning, organizing, occasional childcare support, pet care (such as brushing the dogs) and seasonal outdoor tasks such as garden maintenance and winter preparation. I especially enjoyed the outdoor work. Wherever help was needed, I was happy to step in. I also had plenty of free time to focus on myself and learn. I spent time at the CGC, which is easily accessible by bus from Crestview, explored beautiful hiking trails, and connected with many people in and around Whitehorse. It is a perfect place for adventure, nature, and meaningful encounters. I can highly recommend this family as hosts – they are respectful, organized, supportive, and genuinely caring.

I stayed for about two weeks with Annegrit (and Tui and Stella), it was a blast. The property is quite big, so there's no shortage of work. Mostly outside jobs. I mowed the grass (fast growing), cut overgrown plants. Annegrit is a nice person and we had interesting conversations. Thank you for having me, and also thanks for the fresh bananas, straight from the tree.

Dee's place is beautiful and I'm happy I had the opportunity to stay there. The work was physical, occasionally in rain, but with a great sense of accomplishment I helped building a tyre wall, cementing, moving earth, grouting, spray-cleaning and more. Dee is welcoming, I felt comfortable in the house, and the food was amazing. And in the free time I could see New Plymouth and hike a bit around Taranaki. There's a lot of learning opportunities as Dee was willing to share her wide knowledge of gardening and permaculture. And as such this is definitely recommended for people interested in the field.

The place is very beautiful and Jazz a very responsible and full of energy person who cares about the well-being of the volunteers. She wasn’t there most of the time and I stayed with the employees. Unfortunately I didn’t get along with the chef, with whom I basically worked the whole time, as well as the cold (+cat/dust allergy) affected me a lot, so I had to quit the stay after 5 days. This was the wish of both parties, due to bad communication about the food facilities, working times as well as staying in the common area after work (mainly communicated by the chef). There are two delicious meals per day and you have access to fruits and veggies as well. The milk and cheese consume is very restricted. If you stay hungry at night you can use the facilities in the staff house and prepare pasta + veggies, eggs, beans.. Though, note that without electricity it is pretty dark at night (6/7pm) and there are no warm areas. The hot shower is amazing. My work was at the reception, keep the area clean and carry some stuff around. This was my 4th Workaway and second stay in hospitality at a remote place/mountains. I think it’s a pretty good Workaway if you can handle the cold, enjoy holistic activities (there are some retreats and maybe you can fetch a meditation or yoga class) and nature, are relaxed about loose schedules and buy some extra snacks (recommended by the host).

No words . Clarita was truly our loveliest teacher this year. And don’t get me wrong: all our teachers have been extraordinary, but there’s something about Clarita that you simply have to experience for yourself. From day one, she showed that sparkly, kind, and warm personality that lights up a room. She always came prepared with great topics, and our conversations were constant: meaningful, fun, full of energy, and always packed with the best ideas for teaching. Every single activity Clarita led was done in an impressive way; creative, engaging, and with a lovely sense of humor that made learning feel natural and exciting. Clarita is also a wonderful artist, and you can truly see it in her teaching: she doesn’t just teach , she creates. She turns lessons into art, and her passion inspires everyone around her. Clarita, espero que no sea la última vez que nos veamos. Eres una reina y aquí todos te amamos; eres bienvenida hoy y siempre. ❤️

James is incredibly sweet and always supportive. He managed his own classroom, and his students absolutely loved him; he had a very special connection with them. He was always prepared for his lessons and greeted everyone with a warm smile. I highly recommend James for your project. James, thank you so much for everything you gave to our community. We truly appreciate your dedication, your kindness, and the positive energy you brought every day. You’ll always be welcome here; this will always be your home. Warm hugs and our best wishes!

After three months, this workaway has such a special place in my heart. Every day is different and full of fun and good vibes. I experienced so many random activities and wholesome moments here. The community feeling in this school is very hygge :) The students are so funny, playful and kind. The more you get involved with them and the school, the more you’ll gain from this experience. The volunteers have a lot of creative freedom to host activities in the evenings and to join classes. The teachers and staff are so lovely and always happy to chat and help. The food is amazing!!! The school has such great facilities the volunteer house is so cosy. I can definitely recommend this workaway to anyone who is happy to help in the kitchen and do some cleaning in exchange for connecting with amazing students and really immersing yourself in Danish culture. I miss the Monday beach swims, volleyball games and dancing in the kitchen already.

We spent an amazing six weeks at the sanctuary. We had high hopes, but it was even better than expected and we missed it as soon as we left! We shared our time with a brilliant group of people - the management, the long-term volunteers and our fellow short-term volunteers were all amazing company. Everyone was so welcoming and we really enjoyed spending our days as part of a like-minded community. We were initially nervous about some of the communal living aspects - like the group dinners - but quickly got over that and enjoyed every minute. The work is fair and varied, and everything is so well organised. There's a weekly roster so you always know how your workload is looking well in advance. We really liked that our days off were consecutive, so it actually felt like a weekend. We can completely understand why some people choose to extend their stay; we hope we can visit again! If your values align with the sanctuary's, consider it a must-visit. We'd 100% recommend the experience.
