    Description

Looking for Volunteers for April, May, and June if anyone out there is interested in working on a small mixed farm. These months are about animals, winter clean up, honey bees, and gardening!

We require a minimum one month stay. This gives everyone a chance to get to know each other and the farm routines.

My husband and I have a small farm in east central Saskatchewan where we have a little bit of everything. We have sheep, goats, cows, horses, chickens, turkeys, ducks, guineas, peafowl, dogs and honey bees. During the summer we have daily chores to do, hay to cut and bale, yard work, gardening and extracting honey.

Summer is a busy time for us and we do work hard in order to get things done while the weather is nice. Working around the weather is not for everyone. We are close to the Porcupine forest and a lake. Enjoy biking, kayaking, and fishing in the evenings or days off. We also enjoy visiting around the fire in the evenings. You'll also get a chance to come to local fairs and rodeos during the summer months. Relax in the country.
Winter provides an entirely different set of experiences. In the winter, our focus is on taking care of the animals and birds. Keith is also always cutting trees, skidding them out of the forest and cutting them up for firewood since we only have wood heat on our farm. Keith also takes this time to build on the cabin or whatever other project he has going. We have snowshoes for those who want to go snowshoeing. Saskatchewan in the winter is never dull.

Helpers will experience life on a small farm. Our farm is fairly self sufficient so we raise most of our food or grow it. We also have many barbecues in the evenings with friends and family. My husband and I try to take our helpers to the local fairs and a rodeo. We also take time to go kayaking or fishing at the nearby lake.
Basically, any helper would experience life and work on a small farm.

During the summer months our tasks revolve around the bees and extracting honey. We also cut and bale hay for the animals. There is always yard tasks to do, gardening, weeding, chores, and whatever else needs to be done. Summer months require hard work. We do work hard, but we take the time to unwind and relax.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have two options for accommodations. We have a bedroom in our house or my husband built a cabin for family, friends, or workers. It is a square timber, 2 storey building that he sawed the timbers for. It can sleep 6. It has a small dining area, TV area and a composting toilet. It has hot water and a sink but no shower. Showers will be in the house. It offers more privacy than in the house.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Just a note: there is No Smoking allowed in any of our buildings: cigarettes or Marijuana.

All meals are provided with us in the house. If you require special foods there is a fridge in the cabin where you can put any food you bring. We have bikes available for workers to go exploring the countryside, there are kayaks to use to enjoy the nearby lake and a beautiful yard to relax in during the evenings.

In order to get to our farm you have a couple of options: first you can take a plane to Regina or Saskatoon and we can drive in and pick you up. Both cities are 300 kilometres from our farm. **These options are mainly available during the summer months since it requires a 600km drive and our weather can be unpredictable in winter and spring. Both cities have a bus service that will take you to Yorkton where we can also pick you up. Yorkton is 150 kilometres from our farm. The last option and our preferred choice, is to take Via Rail from Winnipeg to Endeavour, Saskatchewan. Endeavour is 12 kilometres from our farm.
