Description
We are a family, Claire, Sheran and Sophia who are starting work on our own property in central Portugal. We are currently working with our neighbours clearing land to reduce fire risk in the area. We are looking for help with this and with walking our 4 goats daily. We are looking for volunteers who are able to commit to at least a month, with the possibility to stay until the end of March.
Types of help and learning opportunities
Gardening
DIY and building projects
Animal Care
Farmstay help
Creating/ Cooking family meals
Help around the house
General Maintenance
Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
There are lots of opportunities to learn about animal care and reforestation and to get a sense of living this kind of lifestyle. You can also learn more about the day to day tasks, such as milking the goats, walking them in the surrounding areas, soap making, fermenting, cooking and preserving and other handy skills.
Help
The goats need walking daily for 2 hours, the other 3 hours of the exchange would mainly be land clearing, but it would be great to have volunteers who would be happy to apply themselves to any helpful jobs. These could include work in the garden, building raised beds or helping on small projects. We need responsible people who take the work of caring for animals seriously. Most of the tasks are physically demanding and can be tough, so we can only take volunteers who are able to deal with the demands of a challenging lifestyle.
We are asking for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. Due to our situation, we cannot take any volunteers who are not able to work for the full expected time.We are looking for someone who is independent and hard working. Unfortunately, we don't have the time to show you around the local area, so ideally volunteers would have their own transport to be able to explore by themselves.Languages spoken
English: Fluent
Accommodation
We are able to provide a private room, bathroom and kitchen to use. During the week we share lunches together after work which always include either meat or fish and this is our main meal. of the day. Ideally volunteers would eat meat to make meal preparation easier. For breakfast, you can prepare your own or we can prepare it for you. For dinner we usually just have a light snack, so we can provide you with ingredients to prepare something for yourself. If we are not able to provide meals on weekends then we'll make sure you have plenty of ingredients to prepare your own meals. We like to make sure our volunteers are well fed as part of the exchange.
We can help you arrange internet and we are about a 20 minutes drive from the nearest town, Oleiros. What else ...
On weekends there is the possibility to go to the local markets, visit nature spots or other towns/ cities nearby. We like to spend our free time reading, playing with our daughter, watching movies, chatting, playing chess or with crafts. We spend lots of time at the local river beach during the summer which is about a 10 minute drive away and perfect for escaping the heat! In the winter there are lots of beautiful hikes around the area.
