    Description

My husband and I are Dairy Farmers (milking 450 cows) and live just 10 mins from Matamata, the home of Hobbiton!
It's a rural town nestled at the base of the scenic Kaimai Ranges and well known for its thoroughbred industry, dairy farming heritage, and historic Firth Tower Museum. Centrally situated, Matamata offers a range of walking and tramping options, golf courses, and an extensive selection of Cafés. Since the launch of the Lord of the Rings movies and the subsequent opening of the Hobbiton Movie Set Tours, Matamata has become a vibrant visitor destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.
We have two independent daughters, and a 2 year old grandson and another on it's way. We emigrated from South Africa 18 years ago to make a new life for ourselves in New Zealand and could not be any happier! We have always had a special love for the outdoors and animals, so it made perfect sense to become farmers and enjoy the land, sun (and rain) and gorgeous scenery. We have a talking Galah Parrot, 2 cats and a friendly, rambunctious working dog (Australian Cattle Dog).

Please read our profile carefully before you commit due to the location of our farm being out of town in a rural community with NO public transport! It would be advisable to have your own car if you prefer to have your independence to explore the area in more detail, especially with having a beautiful waterfall nearby.

Apart form ourselves, and a full time locally employed staff member, we would love for you to experience and share in the daily chores of running a small but busy household and farm.

Tasks shared, may include a little housekeeping/cooking/gardening but mainly farm work, whether it be tidying up of sheds, feeding calves, weed spraying, cleaning some parts of the dairy or assisting with repairs to fences. Milk harvesting could be part of your experience if you wish, depending on time and how many work away's we host all at once.

This would definitely suit a traveler/backpacker who is looking for a bit of adventure with a taste for some Kiwi experience. You must be honest and reliable! It's unnecessary to have a full drivers licence, but you should at least have a good sense of humor! Our biggest expectation from guests would be to respect our home, and animals as they are part of our family, but we also want you to feel comfortable and enjoy your stay!

Good Kiwi hospitality! You will be treated like family with spare time off to explore the most beautiful parts of NZ.
As an added bonus, Richard, is not only a dairy farmer but a qualified diesel mechanic who has on the last few occasions assisted our traveler's with the purchases of their vehicles (station wagons). This has prevented them from being ripped off by shady car sales people, and allowed them to continue on with their travels having good peace of mind!
We also assist with telephone calls for obtaining good third party car insurance, especially for those who are not fluent in English. We do however, charge a small fee to cover the costs of petrol for seeing these cars, as well as our time away from doing other farm work. Please see our past reviews.

    Accommodation

Our 3 bedroom lockwood home is small but it is our castle! A cabin feel with a log fire going through winter for our main source of heat. We have a room with a single over double bunk bed catering for two (possibly 3 if it's a family), and another bedroom with a double bed. All beds have new mattresses and clean linen. There is only 1 bathroom (shower only) shared with host and all guests, a separate toilet combined with laundry room, an open modern kitchen and dinning area. Large sundeck with outdoor furniture and BBQ with views over lush green paddocks and of course, the Kaimai Mountain Range.
There is free use of our internet for Facebook, Whatsap, doing general travel searches, and bookings but due to limited Data per month we DO NOT allow any Movies ie NetFlix etc.
We do not supply alcohol or cold beverages apart from the normal tea, coffee, Milo, milk and beautiful spring water straight from our farm bore.

You will need to organize your own transport for days off and sightseeing etc Applicants must be drug free, clean and tidy.
We can arrange to have you picked up from the closest bus stop or airport. There is a bus called the "Intercity" which can be caught from central Auckland and brings you straight to the Matamata Information Center and costs between $25 - $65 depending on specials at the time. Bookings are cheaper made on-line. We are able to pick you up directly from the information center and bring you back to the farm 13 mins away by car.

NB: You must provide us with a copy of your HOLIDAY WORKING VISA prior to your arrival as this is a requirement by New Zealand Immigration Law and there will be no exceptions. There are some countries that are not listed on the NZ Immigration website as been allowed to obtain these visas so please check with immigration NZ.
