  • Description

Hello! My name is Javi and I’m 28 years old.

I’m Spanish and I love traveling and living new experiences. Over the last few years, I’ve traveled extensively around Spain, cycled through France and Switzerland, visited Germany, road-tripped through Italy and Albania, and traveled to the Dominican Republic. However, if I had to choose just one trip, it would definitely be my backpacking journey through Ecuador in 2022. I spent three months exploring the country from top to bottom and had an amazing three-week volunteering experience through Workaway, where I planted trees, taught English to children, and helped build essential structures for the local community. That experience is the main reason I’m back on Workaway now — to live something similar in another part of the world.

Regarding my background, I studied Agricultural Engineering and have worked in several positions related to my field. My most recent job was as a supervisor for two years in a flour factory.

I was born and currently live in Burgos, a small city in the north of Spain, in the heart of the Castilla y León region. From my homeland, I would highlight its traditional Castilian cuisine (such as morcilla de Burgos, roast lamb, garlic soup, Ribera del Duero wines, and chorizo), as well as its important historical monuments, like the Cathedral of Santa María and the Monastery of Las Huelgas. Compared to other regions of Spain, the province of Burgos is quite rural, with more than 1,200 small and medium-sized villages (impossible to visit them all!). The climate throughout the year is very variable: in July and August, temperatures often exceed 30°C, while in winter it’s not unusual for temperatures to stay close to 0°C for days, with cold, dry air being our constant companion.

Whenever I have the chance, I escape to my hometown on weekends to disconnect from city life. I also often go alone or with a couple of friends to the mountains (Sierra de la Demanda, Picos de Europa, Pyrenees, etc.), where I enjoy camping, bivouacking, and practicing sports such as climbing or winter mountaineering — unless I’m traveling by bike. Among my other interests, I love cinema, meeting up with friends to chat, and playing basketball from time to time.

My goal with Workaway is to travel in a different way — not as a typical tourist, but by immersing myself as much as possible in a different culture and trying to leave a small positive impact wherever I go, helping in any way I can. Personally, I believe this is the most meaningful way to travel and the one that stays with you the longest.

  • More details about your skills

I am an Agricultural Engineer and an Energy Engineer, so I am very comfortable working with topics related to crops, structures, electricity, energy efficiency, and similar fields.

My mother tongue is Spanish, and I have a good working level of English.

Regarding my skills, I wouldn’t say I’m an expert in any specific area, but I am quite capable when it comes to what could be considered “countryside or hands-on tasks,” such as animal care or horticulture. I have my own vegetable garden, fruit trees, and vineyards, which I take care of during most of the year. I have also worked several times as a general laborer on construction and restoration projects, and I consider myself skilled in using tools.
