  • Description

    Welcome to our profile,

We are Marlene (31) & Steven (33), a Finnish-Scottish couple embarking on a new adventure this year. We recently decided to make a change after living in Turku, Finland for 4 years together. We both quit our full time jobs this summer to travel and get inspired, develop our own projects and learn new skills through courses and workaway communities as well as being of help with our skills to others. We are both vegetarian (also happy to eat vegan food) and non-smokers.

We are looking forward to spending more time in nature, working outdoors in the garden and with animals, learning about self-sufficiency, agrotourism and eco-building as well as being involved in different communities - meeting people to share and learn from. We are both great with children. Marlene is also happy to develop her yoga teaching skills and Steve dwell deeper into woodworking and building projects. We are looking for workaway opportunities this year mainly in Italy, Spain and Sri Lanka. We can offer you a well working enthusiastic team- we have a positive outlook on life, but are also able to communicate honestly about any issues, we are responsible, take initiative and find joy in working. We are tidy and considerate. We both have worked in multiple professions in our lifetime and are happy to apply whatever skills we have (more about that in our personal descriptions). In our free time we enjoy hiking, camping, nature, music (singing and playing guitars), snowboarding, scuba and doing different sports.

    Steven (Steve)
I have been told I am a very light, happy and an "easy to get along with" kind of guy. My main passions are snowboarding, guitar, whittling and the outdoors. So if there is a guitar nearby, don't expect it not to be played. I am always eager and willing to learn new skills and just as happy to dispense my own knowledge and experiences. I look forward to opportunities to grow and get to know those around me. I keep fit through the gym, running and hiking so physical labour is welcome. My main language is English and I am learning Finnish and Spanish.

My professional background is in timber frame design and home energy assessment. My outlook on tasks and problem solving is that if I don’t know something, I make it my goal to find a solution. I studied Building Surveying at university and I am very interested in building projects. In my previous work experience, I worked in a local hotel for wedding and function guests and fine dining restaurant as a food and beverage waiter. As further part time work, I was a labourer for setting up events, as such I am keen to do any physical and active work to get the job done. I now work as a self-employed energy assessor working remotely for clients in the UK.

    Marlene
I am curious, thoughtful and adventurous in nature. I am fascinated by discovering more about the world and it never ceases to amaze me. I value compassion, honesty, respect, clarity in communication and the eagerness to be open to learning. By profession I am a psychologist and a massage therapist. I have worked in family counselling and as an educational psychologist in a school. I have also completed yoga teacher training and I am willing to get more teaching experience. Before working as a psychologist I have worked and volunteered in various job positions since I was 16 – hospitality industry as a receptionist and campsite manager, waitress, helping elderly in household chores, work with children in foster care and babysitting. I have had great experiences through workaway on an ecofarm in France, farms in Australia and New Zealand as well as volunteering in a yoga retreat in Spain for a month. The work involved helping in the garden, taking care of animals, general maintenance, household chores and cooking. I also guided a head massage workshop in the yoga retreat.

This year I am taking time for myself, alongside getting inspired with Steve, to learn more about topics that inspire me and try to find a way to combine my passions to make a living. I am looking forward to work on my music, learn more through courses about use of voice, sound and yoga in a therapeutic way as well as dive deeper into bodywork and the regulation of the nervous system. For the next workaway experiences I am especially interested in learning more about taking care of land, self-sufficiency, permaculture and growing own food, plant medicine, taking care of animals, horse riding, eco building, teaching yoga and community building. In my free time I’d love to read and write, practice yoga, play music, explore the surrounding areas, find out about the local cuisine and connect with the hosts. I speak fluently Finnish, English and Polish and I have conversational skills in Spanish and Russian.

We are excited to meet you,
    Marlene & Steve
