Hard to find the words to describe how generous and welcoming Adam and Cat are! There's a beautiful garden (heaven if you like cooking with fresh ingredients), and there are hiking trails really close by (including to a beautiful secluded beach). Combined with really wonderful (and fun!) hosts that showed me around the Island, and several projects with opportunities to taylor the work you do to your own talents and preferences, it was a truly lovely, memorable time spent on Quadra, and a highly recommended experience!

My husband and I enjoyed teaching and trekking with the students immensely. We also learned much about their family life and culture. Furthermore, the students were eager to learn, and the older students even taught the younger students when there’s not enough teachers. The students who live in the property were sweet, responsible, and respectful. They even cooked and cleaned the homestay. The homestay was neat, clean, and has incredible views of the mountains. We will definitely come back to teach the students again. They mostly need speaking lessons.

Pablo is a real one. We spent mornings talking philosophy over breakfast, middays doing hard labor, and afternoons/evenings in quiet contemplation or community. There were a few incidental miscommunications, and Pablo demonstrated a consistent willingness to proactively communicate through them to alleviate misunderstandings. If I'm ever back in Spain, I'll probably come back here.

This was my first Workaway experience, and I stayed at Ludovic’s place for 12 days. It turned out to be an incredibly meaningful experience that I will always cherish. The work was generally easy-going and enjoyable. I helped with cleaning the house, gardening, a bit of cooking, washing dishes, and searching online for music-related information. Ludovic was always thoughtful and considerate, which made me feel relaxed and comfortable from the very beginning. He also kindly took me to explore nearby towns and villages. I was especially lucky to attend the annual Fête Médiévale de Semur-en-Auxois, where I enjoyed watching horse races and browsing the market stalls. What made my stay even more special was the chance to meet some of his wonderful friends, for which I'm truly grateful. Thank you Ludovic, for making my first Workaway experience such a special one. I’m leaving with wonderful memories, new friendships, and experiences that I’ll treasure for a lifetime!

Kaira was a perfect house guest and workawayer. A lovely person and great company, she kept the house spotlessly clean, was happy to cat sit our boys even at short notice and got stuck into any jobs we asked, including painting almost the whole house because she enjoys painting! (Kaira is also a very talented artist and we will treasure the paintings she left for us). Kaira enjoyed joining us for outings when she could but was equally happy to take herself off on trips or walk around the area. She was always there when we needed someone but never in the way. As I say, a perfect guest and we really hope she will make it back to our corner of Spain.

Had the best time at my second Workaway with Simone in Grândola, Portugal the last 10 days. She introduced me to so many wonderful places, people and food on the back of her moped, I think the whole of Grândola loves her back! We shared many laughs and good times, had a great time with her 2 dogs, 3 cats and 5 horses, went on lovely walks and rides. The work around the horses was not too much, the stables are easy to muck out and otherwise it is letting out when it gets light and bringing in and feeding when it starts getting dark. The accommodation was very comfortable and clean, and Simone is wonderful company. I’ll certainly be missing it now and hoping Simone wants help again in the future 😂

Pablo was a very hardworking and helpful helper. He was always willing to learn new things and quickly adapted to different tasks. He was very friendly, and we were really happy to meet him and have him with us. It was a pleasure hosting him, and we truly appreciated his positive attitude and support.

Henry was a delight to work with. He was eager to learn and showed excellent work ethic. He required no supervision and is the kind of person you can fully trust with a task. Some of the tasks involved painting, and he also learned how to use the chainsaw. We cut some wood together as well.

Volunteer Review: Lauri & Kilian 🛠️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Hosting Lauri and Kilian at our glamping site was an incredible experience. From day one, they proved to be a highly motivated, skilled, and reliable couple who truly left a lasting mark on our project. They jumped straight into some of our biggest ongoing tasks and did a phenomenal job. Thanks to their hard work and craftsmanship, we now have a beautiful new deck completed to a fantastic standard. In addition, they were instrumental in putting the finishing touches on our tiny houses, showing great attention to detail and a real knack for problem-solving. Beyond their practical skills, Lauri and Kilian were a joy to have around—easygoing, communicative, and completely independent in their work. We are incredibly grateful for the massive contribution they made to our place during their stay. Any host would be lucky to have them. Thank you both so much, and you are always welcome back!

I had such a lovely experience volunteering here in Portugal. My role mainly involved helping with the breakfast kitchen shifts and keeping the communal spaces clean and tidy, and I really enjoyed being part of the daily routine. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and relaxed, making it feel like a home away from home. There was also a great social side to the experience — sharing meals, meeting people from all over the world, going to a hippy party, and enjoying beautiful day trips to waterfalls and the surrounding nature. I’m very grateful for the memories, friendships, and experiences I gained during my time here. It was a special chapter of my travels and I would definitely recommend this Workaway to anyone looking for a positive, social, and authentic experience in Portugal.

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting Brooke at our site, and we cannot recommend her highly enough! Brooke brought a wonderful energy to our team. She has a fantastic sense of humor that kept everyone smiling. One of her biggest standouts was her collaboration with our morning service. Brooke helped in decorating the breakfasts for our guests, turning the first meal of the day into a beautiful, photo-worthy experience. It was a thoughtful touch that truly elevated our guest experience. We are incredibly thankful for the time, effort, and joy she invested in our place during her stay. Thank you for everything, Brooke—you are welcome back anytime!

My time with Keith was unexpected and truly valuable. Keith is a great guide — patient, knowledgeable, and a true English gentleman. You'll have the chance to learn basic boat handling and how waterway locks work. If you love stories, you'll enjoy his stories — many of which come from his own long life and personal experience, also sometimes histories. His English has an old-fashioned, very British charm. He's also a great cook and often surprises with interesting dishes. Life on board is interesting, but it's not a holiday. You'll be expected to help with cleaning and daily upkeep. If you have skills in plumbing, electrics, or general DIY, Keith will give you technical tasks to do. He never pushes you—he's very much a gentleman. One tip: bring a small flag to leave on the boat—it becomes part of the journey. You'll also need to adapt to a more resource-conscious lifestyle. I honestly realised how much water I used to waste before. This trip opened up a world I'd never known, and I came away with more than I expected.

I choose Fredrik's place for my first workaway exeperience and I was there for 6 weeks between may and june. I have a lot of things that I would like to say about my stay, but the one that I want to underline the most is how many skills I have learnt there; I wasn't really used to DIY projects and so the first days were a bit challenging, but everyone (both Fredrik and the other workawayers) was willing to help me and to answer to all the questions that I asked. I really want to thank them because they made the whole experience much easier for me. The days at Fredrik's can be really full of things to do, but that's a positive thing because you won't get bored for a second. I usually worked during the morning and joined the other workawayers in a lot of fun activities in the afternoon (like hiking, biking, canoeing and playing volleyball) but you are completely free to manage your time as you want; you can also take one of the cars available and organize some two-days trips to visit some beautiful places that are a little bit far away from the camping, I went for a trip to Kjerag (on the Lysefjord) with the other workawayers that I strongly recommend. I had the opportunity to work on a trail that was quite a mess, but after removing roots, stones and grass bumps and building some wooden pathways I am satisfied with the final result. This project was not boring at all and I enjoyed working on it; however, if you would like to do something different, Fredrik has a lot of other projects and he will surely find one that fit your skills the most. I want to spend also some words on the accomodation because it's extremely comfortable and I think that, even if this is just my first workaway experience, it will be really hard to find another one that can match this standard in my next workaway. In the end, I want to thank again Fredrik for this opportunity, I will carry it with me for life; and I think that, if you want to experience the Norwegian wilderness, this workaway is surelythe right choice.

Marceau is one of the best workawayers we have ever had ! He works hard, fast and is consequent until the job is done...or the problem is solved. He remembers everything he is told. Every detail, (maybe he even makes notes) and is incredibly focused. He is multi talented too !!! He prefers to work through to get a job done, rather than take breaks. When he has worked his hours he should be respected for all his efforts and not taken advantage of. He is one of the very best workawayers on this site. In addition his temperament is relaxed and he is down to earth. As hosts we need our own private time and space, which he understood totally and for himself he needs the same. He helped us tremendously and we can't thank him enough. Our house is always there for him - as a workawayer and as a friend !

We had a really great time at Nicola and Jasmina’s place! It is quite heavenly, surrounded by beautiful nature, far from the busy life. We can only recommend relaxing/ doing therapy in the hammocks, walking the cute dogs and watching the little kitties play. The work was nothing much, we did most of it together with Jasmina (Feeding the pigs, weeding…), which we had to get used to in the beginning (since we were working mostly on our own at other Workaway’s). But it’s a great way to learn about nature, their way of living and to exchange thoughts and opinions! Jasmina ist very welcoming, warm-hearted, likes to share her knowledge and cooks the most amazing food (but Nicolas risotto doesn’t stand far from it!!)! We’re still thinking about the amazing cherries and are curious to see how the place will evolve eventually :)) We absolutely recommend going there, if you want to connect with beautiful nature and people!

We absolutely loved staying with Lea & Fredi! We truly could not have asked for better hosts. Every evening, we had the most amazing traditional German dishes & tried lots of local beers, wine, & lemonade! We helped the lovely couple maintain their organic nature-oriented lifestyle by helping mostly with the firewood! It was so amazing to learn how they have created this peaceful farm home while also prioritizing recycling, local goods & services, and sourcing from their land itself! They epitomize exactly what a cultural exchange should be! They were extremely welcoming, caring, and open Volner minded. They made a conscious and consistent effort to integrate us into their culture at every point. They sent us on gorgeous hikes in the nearby alps and let us borrow their bikes to explore even further! We also enjoyed learning the traditional german sauna experience & rituals - what a beautiful way to integrate vulnerability and community into relationships! Thank you Lea & Fredi - we hope to be back someday!
