We stayed in Teshima with Alan for a month and we had an absolutely brilliant time. The volunteering consisted mainly of cleaning the properties, feeding the goats and chickens and gardening. The working hours were always respected and most days we worked for 3 hours. We stayed in a lovely traditional Japanese house in the village with enough heaters to keep it nice and toasty. We absolutely fell in love with the island of Teshima, you have use of bikes and can whizz around the island in no time. We went in January so even though it was off season, it was still gorgeous. Just make sure to wrap up warm. Theres a small shop on the island where can get essentials and regular ferries to Takamatsu and the other art islands. We would love to come back to visit and maybe even buy a house on the island haha! We really enjoyed experiencing Japanese island life :)

We spent just over three weeks in Isahaya with Akino, Wataro, Momo and Nene. We had an absolutely brilliant time volunteering at this place. It was a perfect balance of teaching and having fun. It was also lovely to meet all of the parents and to have so many opportunities to interact with the community. Everyone is so open and will practice English or Japanese with you. We loved the day trip to Unzen with all the families. The activities that Akino thought of were always real thoughtful and enjoyable. Akino has been a perfect host and was always ready to help us and answer any questions we may have. The project really connected with us and we think it's a great idea to teach English through play, daytrips and volunteers from all over the world. Isahaya is a short train ride from Nagasaki and other lovely places like Shimabara and Obama Onsen. The Workaway house has everything you need. There was a perfect balance between volunteering and free time, with the schedule provided for us for the month we were there which we really appreciated so we could plan our days off. We'll most definitely be back to visit and we'd love to welcome you all in Spain and the UK

Ainhoa

Thank you Wilma & Harm for a really enjoyable 10 days earlier this month. You are kind, generous people & look after your workaways. I loved the location of the farm, with amazing surroundings and views. Harm did well when he chose the position of the communal kitchen. I enjoyed the variety of tasks - helping with the vanilla ( not coffee season in Feb!), helping clean the finca & taking turns at preparing lunch. Also, tidying the garden area behind reception. I enjoyed walking both the coffee trail & waterfall trail - once i found it! , and even venturing off to find the chocolate factory even tho it was closed on Saturday. We were lucky to see the howler monkeys, lots of hummingbirds and other birds, including the tiger heron. Can't believe the sloths were spotted after I left! Thank you again for the opportunity.

Shari and her friend Yen Nhi (Yen Nhi already thé second time) stayed with us for nine days (much too short); they were both very helpful and always in good spirits. We worked a lot together and also had time for activities and fun. Our animals loved them. They were both a real asset to our home. We hope to welcome them both back again soon. Thank you very much!

It was an absolute pleasure to host Emma and Elodie. Emma brings fun, joyfulness and ‘let’s do it’ energy, and Elodie brings quiet leadership, humour and great organisation skills. Part of a large volunteer group, they worked well individually and as a team. During their stay they completed weed control, nursery work including propagation, trail building, planting, instigators of the ‘nature shed clean up’ and community service relations. Emma and Elodie were also part of cooking our last meal. Emma made a delicious main meal and Elodie made zingy saladsl. Whatever job they have, they jump in with enthusiasm, positivity and commitment. We highly recommend both Emma and Elodie. Thank you so much team!

Our 2.5 weeks with Monique and Stella were truly special and something we will always cherish. Stella completely stole our hearts – she is beautifully trained, incredibly loving, loyal, and such a stunning Border Collie. We already miss her very much, think of her often, and truly hope we’ll get to see her again one day. Monique is a wonderfully kind and thoughtful person. From the very beginning she made us feel welcome, showed us everything in detail, and provided all the important information we needed. Communication was always easy and open, and we genuinely enjoyed our conversations with her. The house and the surrounding area are beautiful, and everything was very well organised. Alongside the house and dog sitting, we also helped manage the Airbnb, which was straightforward and uncomplicated. We can wholeheartedly recommend this Workaway experience and feel very grateful for the time we spent there. We sincerely hope our paths cross again one day.

Part of a large volunteer group, Janet worked individually and in a team. During Janet’s stay she completed weed control, nursery work including propagation, trail building, community service relations, and planting. Janet really enjoyed time in the nursery, especially ‘pricking out’ seedlings into the next potting to grow on. Janet has a gentle spirit, much curiosity, and cares about the environment and people deeply. She is a great active listener and open to embracing new knowledge and opportunities as she explores the world around her. Janet was a valued team member and deeply moved by her time at this place. Thanks for coming to visit and we wish you a wonderful adventure for the rest of your travels Janet!

Shirin is quick to laugh and has a wonderful dry sense of humour. We loved Shirin’s curiousity and how she applied herself to any new task with gusto. Part of a large volunteer group, Shirin worked well individually and in a team. During Shirin’s stay she completed weed control, nursery work including propagation, trail building, planting, and community service relations. Shirin also was part of cooking our last meal with bread baking and a delicious Apple Crumble. Shirin was part of the plan to create a community poem about their workaway stay with us, and provided entertainment with her ukelele, all of which was magical. We highly recommend Shirin. Enjoy the rest of your travels Shirin.

Lauren is an absolute delight to Host. Her bubbly nature is a standout, she is easy to laugh, quick to support others, flexible with multi-skills. Part of a large volunteer group, Lauren worked well individually and in a team. During Lauren’s stay she completed weed control, nursery work and propagation, planting, nature shed clean up, website page development and was one of 5 Leaders when we hosted the NZ Airforce for volunteer community service – her ability to confidently lead and make people feel at ease with clear direction is excellent. After our work day, Lauren generously shared her yoga skills, which was a big highlight for our volunteer group. Lauren was also exceptional at jumping into the kitchen, washing our many dishes after community meals and keeping our communal space clean. We really appreciated Lauren’s work ethic and joyous energy. We highly recommend Lauren to any Host. Keep spreading your joy Lauren!

Angela brings zest and vitality to every interaction. Her energy is akin to a firelighter, creating crackle and pop to any space she is in, then sprinkle qualities of curiousity, respect, thoughtfulness and kindness. Angela is a complete package and a delight to host. Part of a large volunteer group, Angela worked well individually and in a team, and loves to complete tasks. Thanks for your generosity Angela. During Angela’s stay she completed weed control, nursery work, propagation, trail building, planting, nature shed clean up, community service relations and was always helpful around our community kitchen. We highly recommend Angela. Enjoy the rest of your travels Angela!

Marianne brought a happy, calm and capable energy to everything she did, working easily on her own or as a team, and took pride in her work. Marianne was part of a large volunteer group, and was an absolute joy to host. Marianne did a variety of work with weed control, nursery work and propagation, trail building, planting, community service relations, and Marianne was always helpful around our community kitchen including making a delicious apple crumble on the last night. Marianne really enjoyed planting, and did a fabulous job planting out a steep hill solo. We loved Marianne’s curiosity and desire to learn everything she could while we were together. We highly recommend Marianne. Enjoy the rest of your trip Marianne!

I spend two weeks here and it was a nice experience. Two remarkable things: 1) u never gonna be hanger because they provide abundant food and in good quality too. 2) Bruno, one of the owner, is a sweetheart and he is very conscientious of what is happening with voluntaries. He is willing to give u a hand with the best good energy. Just two things I guess they must be pay attention at: 1) the house where voluntaries stay: full of filtrations on the roof (are lagoons there on the floor every time it’s raining ) Linkings in the bathroom (noisy and a waste of water) 2) There should be a form on bathroom’s door with the names of each person in the house, that way will be a register of who is the turn to cleaning up every day!!!! Many people, 1 bathroom and nobody ever cleaning it!!! In general, the farm is big, well maintained and organized. You will work 4 hs with a bunch of free time, and will have one day off at week. Fair for everyone and a great school of languages!! Thank u for have me, it was an experience full of energy and good people!!!

We had a wonderful experience hosting Minori. She was very respectful of our house rules and adapted easily to our family life. She got along very well with the children and built a lovely connection with them. She is also an amazing cook – we enjoyed so many delicious meals thanks to her! We shared beautiful moments together and created unforgettable memories. We are truly grateful for the time we spent together and would happily host her again.

I had the chance to spend 4 weeks at Harim’s school and it was amazing! I started at the downtown school, where I stayed for a week, then I asked Harim if I could move to the uptown school and he was very kind to arrange this. I enjoyed both schools a lot, but I preferred staying in a quieter area. The downtown apartment is very close to the medina and there is a lot of stuff to do; the school is just a 5-minute walk from there. The uptown apartment is in the same building as the school, and it’s in a very quiet neighbourhood, far from the tourist areas, but it’s still very easy to reach the medina from there. In both apartments there are shared rooms for the volunteers and a shared kitchen. While I was there, there were always between 5–9 volunteers, and I really enjoyed the time I spent with them. Everything you need is within walking distance, and I especially enjoyed the uptown apartment being very close to the main market. The work was very easy and fun: you just have to have short conversations with the students (about 15–20 minutes each). Most of the students were high school or university students, but there were also some children and adults. Sometimes we could have free conversations; other times we were given questions to ask the students, especially if they were beginners. Thanks to these conversations, you have a great opportunity to really get in touch with the locals and to learn a lot about Moroccan culture, which I enjoyed very much. The students are very open to talking about their country and culture, I had a lot of great conversations! Since we mainly had to work in the evenings (from Wednesday to Friday) and a bit more on the weekends, we had a lot of free time. Harim also gives you the opportunity to join organized trips, which are very cheap and take you to the most beautiful spots in Morocco. During the trips you also have the chance to meet people from the other two schools. While I was there, he organized a trip to the south, one to the north, and one to the desert. I highly recommend joining the desert trip, it was an unforgettable experience! Thanks to this experience I really had the chance to learn a lot about Morocco, which is really hard if you just travel as a tourist. I would definitely consider coming back in the future! The only thing I want to mention is that at the uptown school there is no washing machine (which is not clearly mentioned). However, there is a place nearby where you can do your laundry for €5, so for me it was not an issue at all.
