Description
Welcome to Our Family in Magelang!
Hello and welcome to our home in Magelang, Central Java! 😊
We are a warm and simple Indonesian family who would love to welcome Workawayers from around the world into our home and our everyday life.
I am a school principal, and my wife is an elementary school teacher. We have two sons — one is in senior high school and the younger one is in elementary school. Education is naturally a big part of our family life, but we also love sharing food, stories, laughter and everyday experiences with people from different countries and cultures.
We believe that cultural exchange is not something that only happens in a classroom. It happens around the dining table, while cooking together, talking with children, visiting neighbours, joining community activities, or simply sharing stories about our different ways of life.
Our home is located in Magelang, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Central Java. We have two rooms available for Workawayers. One of the rooms is upstairs, and when you open the door, you can enjoy a beautiful view towards Mount Sumbing. At the back of our house, a large window looks directly onto our fish pond and garden — a peaceful place to relax, read, or enjoy a cup of coffee.
What will you be part of?
Our main project is connected with education and children in our local community. You may spend time with children at school or around our neighbourhood, helping them practise English, reading, storytelling, games, creative activities, sports or simply building their confidence to communicate.
You don't have to be a professional teacher. We value people who are patient, positive, creative and willing to connect with children.
But we don't want your experience to stop at education.
We would also love to introduce you to Javanese culture and everyday Indonesian life. Depending on what is happening during your stay, you may have the opportunity to visit local communities, experience traditional performances, learn local arts and crafts, try traditional food, join community events and, when possible, even participate in a traditional performance yourself.
And when you have free time, Magelang is yours to explore — from the magnificent Borobudur area to mountains, waterfalls, villages, traditional markets, handicraft centres and many beautiful natural places.
For us, Workaway is not simply about exchanging a few hours of work for accommodation.
It is about people meeting people.
We hope that you will not feel like a guest staying in a house, but like a friend who has temporarily become part of our family.
Come as a Workawayer, leave as part of our family. ❤️ -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
This is much more than a volunteer opportunity—it is a chance to experience authentic Indonesian village life through meaningful cultural exchange.
By living with a local host family, travellers will become part of everyday life in a Javanese community. They will share meals, participate in family activities, visit local markets, and experience the warmth and hospitality that Indonesian culture is known for.
Volunteers will also learn about local customs, traditions, folklore, and community values by joining village events, cultural ceremonies, and school activities. They will gain insight into the Indonesian education system while working alongside local teachers and interacting with enthusiastic elementary school students.
In return, travellers are encouraged to share their own language, culture, traditions, hobbies, and life experiences. Through conversations, games, music, storytelling, and creative activities, both volunteers and local people learn from one another, creating genuine friendships and lasting cross-cultural understanding.
By the end of the program, we hope every volunteer leaves with a deeper appreciation of Indonesian culture, improved intercultural communication skills, unforgettable memories, and a second family in Magelang. -

Help
We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic, and open-minded volunteers who enjoy working with children and are excited about cultural exchange. Our Full English Immersion Program connects international volunteers with local elementary schools and village communities in Magelang, Central Java.
Your main role will be to encourage students to use English in a fun and natural way. You can support classroom activities, introduce games, songs, storytelling, simple crafts, and conversations about your country and culture. The goal is not formal teaching but inspiring children to feel confident communicating in English.
You will also have opportunities to:
Visit local elementary schools and assist teachers with English activities.
Share your hobbies, skills, or cultural traditions with students and community members.
Participate in village events and learn about Javanese customs, ceremonies, and daily life.
Spend time with your host family and experience authentic Indonesian family life.
Exchange ideas with local teachers about education and cross-cultural learning.
No teaching qualification is required. What matters most is your positive attitude, creativity, patience, and willingness to connect with children and the local community.
We usually ask volunteers to help 3–4 hours per day, 4–5 days per week, leaving plenty of free time to explore Magelang and its surrounding attractions. -

Accommodation
We have a private and comfortable bedroom for guests. They can also use the internet network with a speed of 40 Mbps for free. In other rooms that directly face the rice fields behind the house can also be used. It depends on which room they want to choose.
In our area there are also various types of public transportation. We can also help find scooters to rent so that mobility will be easier and cheaper. We will pick up some volunteers according to where they get off. The motorbikes they can use are automatic motorbikes so they are not difficult to drive. Because we enjoy seeing tourist attractions, we will also be happy to take them to the places they want to visit, congratulations, we have time in the middle of our work routine.
My wife is good at cooking. Some guests who feel her cooking are very happy. The volunteers also often share how to cook and my wife also tries recipes from the volunteers' home countries. It's very interesting. I can taste dishes from various countries cooked in our kitchen. -
What else ...
We want every volunteer to enjoy a balanced experience of meaningful community involvement and personal exploration. Outside of your volunteer hours, you'll have plenty of opportunities to discover the beauty of Magelang and Central Java.
In your free time, you can visit the world-famous Borobudur Temple, enjoy sunrise views from Punthuk Setumbu, explore traditional villages, local markets, waterfalls, rivers, rice fields, and nearby mountains. If your visit coincides with local festivals or ceremonies, you are welcome to join and experience the rich traditions of Javanese culture.
Our host families are happy to introduce you to authentic Indonesian home cooking, local snacks, and everyday village life. You are encouraged to learn a few Bahasa Indonesia phrases, share your own culture, and build genuine friendships with local people.
Transportation within the village is easy on foot or by bicycle, and public transportation is available to Magelang town and nearby destinations. We are also happy to help you arrange transportation for sightseeing or weekend trips.
This program is ideal for travellers who are curious, respectful, flexible, and eager to experience Indonesia beyond the usual tourist route. Rather than simply visiting, you'll become part of a family, a school, and a community—creating memories and friendships that will last long after your stay. -
