Description
We are a Dutch family living in Portugal – my husband, our 15-year-old son and I. We moved to Portugal now 3 years ago. Step by step, we are creating a beautiful, free place where we aim to be as self-sufficient as possible. It’s still very much a work in progress – not a perfectly organized project, but a place that is growing, evolving, and becoming more beautiful every day.
We’re looking for someone who would love to be part of this journey.
We have space for a kind, enthusiastic, and independent digital nomad who enjoys living in nature, in a very rural agricultural area, surrounded by animals and mostly self supplying.
We look forward to welcoming friendly people who bring their own stories and adventures, so we can share, learn, and enjoy all the wonderful things life here has to offer. Please feel invited to reach out.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We live with and love our animals in a respectful and conscious way. There is a great wealth of agricultural knowledge here: from working the soil and caring for trees to growing our own vegetables and fruit. We learn a lot ourselves from the village people around us. How to cooperate with the seasons, how to draw water from the earth, and how to build our own independent energy systems.
This is a place where self-sufficient living is not a trend, but a way of being. A place where you learn with your hands — by doing, observing, and feeling. And of course, it is also a place to immerse yourself in the Portuguese language and culture — to truly understand not only the land, but also its people.
Help
In exchange for a free place to live, we ask for about 1 to 2 hours of help per day on the land. This could include small practical tasks, helping in the garden, watering plants, tidying up, and whatever is needed at the time. It’s not heavy work, but it’s important that you can see what needs to be done and take initiative.
A genuine affinity with animals is essential. We have a horse, three dogs, two cats, and a flock of chickens. Experience with horses would be a big plus. When we occasionally travel to the Netherlands or elsewhere, we want to feel completely at ease leaving the care of our animals and trees in your hands.
Being responsible and reliable is therefore very important.
We’re looking for someone who lives cleanly and tidily, is calm, positive, values freedom, and enjoys helping to build something meaningful together. The place is green, open, and sometimes a little messy because we’re still developing it – but that’s also part of its charm. Together, we can create something truly special here. We keep an open mind, live positively, and love exchanging experiences with others.
Languages
Languages spoken
Portuguese: BeginnerThis host offers a language exchange
For those who come specifically to learn Portuguese, there is a school just ten minutes away by car that offers free daily Portuguese classes. This is a wonderful opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the language and integrate more quickly into local life. In general, it is very helpful to have your own means of transport here, preferably a car, as we live in a rural area and facilities are not within walking distance.
Accommodation
You will stay in your own private house on the other side of the property, giving you plenty of peace and privacy.
There is Starlink internet, hot water, and you can cook in the shared kitchen. If it feels right, we can occasionally share meals together.
On warm days, there is a swimming pool to cool off. You can easily park your car on the property — there is plenty of space.
And if you enjoy it, you are welcome to grow your own vegetables in the large vegetable garden and truly become part of the land.
There can be two options. If someone helps 25 hours a week, I will provide breakfast, lunch and diner. But, most of the time, there will not be more than 10 hours a week. So, maybe than the food could be arranged by the work awayer self, in return for lore free time to maybe do digital nomad work.
