Located in the beautiful Serra de Monchique. We run our farm along Permaculture lines.
We are: Tom and Monique; Oxford our dog, Tobias the cat, 6 chickens, 5 female goats: Kimberly, Bianca, Penny, Susu and Emma and our buck Boris.
At the moment we are building a small scale goat dairy business on our homestead. We need to build and organize a lot of things in order to do so. Are you a couple (or two people travelling together) and is at least one of you 25 years old than we are looking for you to take some of the routine tasks on you, which would help us a great deal. These routine tasks are: goat herding & care taking; making compost; gathering, cutting and organising fire wood and cooking meals.
For you it means you will be fully engaged on our farm, where you can experience what it is like to live on a small scale farm.
It will be an ideal opportunity for those who want to start their own small scale farm.

An excellent physical condition is a must. The farm is located on a steep slope which you will have to walk up and down while working.
A good working spirit and a sense of humor is important to us. The work is well organised and thought and lived through. Jobs will be clearly explained. Taking our explanation to your heart, taking initiative and being responsibility for the job is important to us so you will be able to do the job by yourself. Please make sure you are someone who can leave your mobile phone alone for a while.
It is hands on at our place so be prepared for that. We are serieus about voluntary work and will give you tasks that matter to us and to the farm.
The minimum stay is 3 weeks. We are open to long term stays. Minimum age 25 years old.

We are two Dutch people that moved into the Serra de Monchique some 9 years ago. It would be very interesting to hear from you where you come from and what your adventures in life are. We like a chat and exchange experiences.
There is a lot to learn on the farm just by doing things and being here. How much and what will depend on the experience that you already have. We just hope you will come and enjoy your time here with us.
These will be the tasks we want you to ask to do for us (valid from December 2019-March 2020):
-Herding our goats every morning around. Our goats are taken into the serra every morning for a two hour herding. It comes down to take them to a green location and hang out with them there. The goats are friendly and after some practice easy going. The scenery is amazing.
-Keeping the goat house clean and giving the goats fresh hey and water. The goat house needs to be cleaned ones a week. The goats need fresh water and hey every day.
-Clearing out the goats house deep litter and turn it into a compost heap. We keep a deep litter system for the bedding in the goat house. The deep litter needs to be taken out a few times a year. It is piled into a compost heap that is used in the orchard and in the vegetable garden. It is time now to clear it out. The job takes about a day with two people.
-Collecting, cutting and organising wood to store it on several places on the land. After having been in a wildfire a year ago there is a lot of burned or halve burned wood laying around. It needs to be gathered, cut and organised. The twigs will have to be chipped in a chipper.
- Cooking and keeping the kitchen clean. We will ask one of you to cook one simple meal for lunch with local ingredients during the week days. We use our own eggs, goat meat and cheese for making meals. Vegetables are bought on the local market or in a local store. We have herbs in the garden near the house and a cupboard full of spices. We do not do special diets like vegan or raw food. We do not have the budget to provide a healthy meal on that level. But we do like creative and international cooking with little means. Keeping the kitchen very clean after and before cooking is very important to us since the kitchen is also used for making cheese.
-Cook and bake in a wood oven about twice a week. With the gathering and organising of the wood we are always left with small branches that are too big for the chipper and too small for fire wood. These pieces are good to use in our wood bread oven in which you can make much more then only bread.
We ask you to help for 25 hours a week. The jobs require some experience in dealing with farm animals (goats, cows or horses), cooking for a small group, working on the land and some general working experience (to be able to organise your job). The minimum stay is three weeks but we are very open for long term stays.
The serra is a beautiful spot to volunteer. Your weekend can be spend in the mountains and at the see. However we will ask you not to come here for just that but be sure you will be able to enjoy the hard work on the farm in the first place.
We will offer you a nice and reliable place to stay. Living in the farmhouse as part of the family during the working hours. For you we have a straw bale house to stay in. Blankets, sheets and towels are provided. The house has a roofed outdoor kitchen and a semi outdoor bathroom with WC, sink and a shower with hot and cold water. The kitchen is fully equipped. The straw bale house has a wood stove to keep you warm. You will have to organise your on wood for the wood stove.
The farm house will be open from 9.30 until 21.00 during weekdays, we will kindly ask you to respect our privacy during the hours that the house is not open which includes the weekends. You can either make your breakfast in the farmhouse after it's open or make it in your own kitchen when you are an early riser.
We will lunch and have supper all together. The main meal will be at lunchtime. For supper we mostly have soup and bread or leftovers from the lunch.
We will have three meals a day together: breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there are simple tea breaks in between. We will ask you to take care of the meals for some days in the week. This includes leaving behind a clean kitchen and table.
There will always be plenty of tea, water cordial to drink, you can serf yourself. There might be someone who makes a cake, but there is no guarantee . For the rest of the snacks, drinks etc. you have to take care yourself.
We have only a very limited internet available through a very expensive satellite connection. Since we need this for the farm and the farm business we would kindly ask you to use your own internet. There is no connection available in the straw bale house, but there is a G4 connection on the top of our land. For some providers there is a connection near the farmhouse.
From our site there is a free bus to Monchique three times a week. From there it is possible to go anywhere. Hitch hiking seems to work as well. There is a lot to visit in the Algarve. Besides beaches there a cultural events in the summer.
The serra de Monchique is famous for its footpath. You do not need to go anywhere for a good walk, you can just start at our site.
