    Description

Located in the beautiful Serra de Monchique. We run our farm along Permaculture lines. We are trying to be self supporting. Fruit trees & vegetable garden. Goats and chicken help us and give us eggs, milk & cheese. Which are a substantial part of our diet.

We are just two people on the farm so we are looking for volunteers with substantial experience in basic building skills, farm animal care or gardening. You will have to be able to work on your own.

An excellent physical condition is a must. The farm is located on a steep slope which you will have to walk up and down while working.

A good working spirit and a sense of humor is important to us. You will need a flexible attitude to follow our ways of doing things. The work is well organised and thought through. Jobs will be clearly explained.

It is hands on at our place so be prepared for that. We are serieus about voluntary work and will give you tasks that matter to the farm. So it will be meaningful and responsible as well.

The minimum stay is 3 weeks.

We will offer you a nice and reliable place to stay. Living in the farmhouse as part of the family during the day and sleeping in a big tent with a clean bed at night. Matrassen and sheets are provided. There is a WC and there is a shower with hot and cold water.

Are you looking for the real experience of what it is like to live on a small scale, self sustainable farm? Would you like to start a farm yourself one day? Check in with us. We will show you how the farm works and what you will need when you will start your own. By working with us, you will get a good impression of how it feels to work in this beautiful place like ours and what the pros and cons are of running your own farm.

On our farm you can think of tasks like land clearing, cutting and organising wood, working in one of the vegetable gardens, maintenance on fruit trees. We also have building projects going on where you are asked to assist.

Note: we work with regular building materials like bricks and cement most of the time. But we also use trees from the mountains as building materials.

Sometimes a task can take some days and sometimes it is just a small task that fits in an afternoon. Important for us is that you have the patience to finish a task well. Most of the things will require a good concentration on the task. In the setting where we live in, nothing is a quick fix. To make things work requires time, skill (or patience) and attention.

We will be happy to learn you things or provide you with information about farm life. But keep in mind that we also ask you to bring something to us. When you apply to work with us on the farm, please let us know what you have in mind to bring to us. In this way, we will learn something from you and you will learn something from us.

Depending on the weather breakfast is at 7.00 or 8.00 depending on the time of the year. The idea is that you live with us, so you will be asked to do some cooking and household tasks.

We ask you to help for 25 hours a week.

You will be staying in a bell tent. The tent has a bed, sheets and blankets. All cleanly washed. You can use the eco campsites bathroom with a shower and a toilet.

We will have three meals a day together: breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there are simple tea breaks in between. We will ask you to take care of the meals for some days in the week. This includes leaving behind a clean kitchen and table.

There will always be plenty of tea and water to drink. For the rest of the snacks, drinks etc. you have to take care yourself. We are an organised household and will ask some being organised and clean from you too.

We can cook with meat and vegetarian. And we would like to learn new recipes from you of course… We use the products from our land. Vegetables, eggs, milk and meat. If there is not enough on the land we buy additional local and seasonal vegetables and (Portuguese)rise and pasta. Our way of cooking is simple and tasty, mostly vegetarian but not vegan. Since we usually have a lot of dairy products and eggs.

We have only a very limited internet available. Checking and sending emails is possible once a day on our computer. Skype, hangouts, sending pictures, watching films etc. is not possible.

The internet is used for our business and for the research we have to do for our project.

From our site there is a free bus to Monchique three times a week. From there it is possible to go anywhere. Hitch hiking seems to work as well. There is a lot to visit in the Algarve. Besides beaches there a cultural events in the summer.
The serra de Monchique is famous for its footpath. You do not need to go anywhere for a good walk, you can just start at our site.
