If you’ve always wished you could live on a hobby farm and live that “homesteader” life you’ll get to immerse yourself in the farm. Want to learn to make cheese? Pickle veggies? Milk a cow? If we don’t already know how and can teach you we will learn right along with you. Have knowledge from your own culture? Even better! We’d love to learn. And I can teach you violin if you’re interested.
I (Madi) have lived in 4 provinces of Canada, 2 states, and England. I've traveled through much of North America and Europe and know what it's like to be in a new culture, culture shock is a real thing!
We are hoping for a workawayer that will come in as "part of the family" helping all around with house, chores, and if you're comfortable with it, childcare. And in turn you get to enjoy our plentiful home raised food and loving animals.
The area is rural so there isn't much to do around here off farm. There is a dinosaur museum 30 ish min away and a good sized city 40 min away if you need to go shopping or want to go to a bar or cinema. Hiking etc. is also a bit of a drive and wildlife can be a concern at the nearest ones.
The biggest cities in the province are 5-9 hours away.

  • Help

    Help

Farm chores (cows, rabbits, chickens, dogs, & cats), house chores, childcare, handy work etc. Basically we will work together to get everything done.
Cows - typically this is just checking that their water is still good, maybe bring them a bucket of snacks, if you can run a tractor you might bring them a bale of hay. We can also hand milk them if/when we want to make cheese and butter.
Rabbits - if we have babies you may need to move skids around the yard for them to get fresh grass. Otherwise it's mostly distribute pellets, hay, greens. Once every 1-2 weeks we clean out their trays (waste).
House chores are same as most homes: dishes, vacuum, clean up after critters, etc
Childcare - We have a very happy baby, he will be 1 in July. If you're open to watching him while I run errands that would be great. Also hanging out with him while I work on the computer.
Handy work - is up to what your skills are and what Greg needs around the farm and Madi wants around the house.
All of these are optional depending on your interests and skills or what you would like to learn.

I would like my son (1 yo in July) to learn French so French/English bilingual would be A++

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have a large room in the basement with a king size bed. There is also an unfinished bathroom down there so you have your own toilet. If you’re talented at tiling you can finish the bathroom for us! We always have family supper. Breakfast is by your own choice, lunch we sometimes cook for everyone and sometimes fend for ourselves depending on what’s going on. But no matter what there is food available.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Transportation is limited. We have a jeep that at best can be described as “running” that you can borrow if you have a license and insurance. Otherwise you’ll have to bring your own vehicle or catch a ride with Madi to and from town.

I totally respect your need to work, if your hours are flexible then it will be easiest to balance my online work and yours! We are entrepreneurs with two businesses but none of the workawayer tasks will be for the businesses.

It’s a farm, lots of space, we can rig up some kind of hook up situation if you really need it, winter might get difficult to keep things from freezing but it can be done.

If your animals get along with others well we should be good. The room you will be staying in has to stay cat free due to extended family allergies (we keep the guest room a safe space for grandma). We have cats, chihuahuas, and button quail inside and a variety of critters outside.
