    Description

We are a family in the Kootaney's BC. living just outside of Kaslo. We would like to improve our land so that it can grow food, host community gatherings and create musical events. Our "Backroad" community is a unique part of Kaslo with many new homesteads and young families/friends. We are involved in the local community through music, festivals, and sports. My partner also has experience bringing new visitors up into the Alpine. His name is Dean and owns a small local landscaping business that brings local plants and compost that helps better our own gardens. We also homeschool some of our children and have alternative ways of guiding their learning in outdoor ways. There is an interesting community of families who share this unique way of raising their children however we are also connected and supported by our public school community as well.

My name is Allison and I am a local musician as well as early years teacher at a Waldorf inspired centre.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

There is lots of fresh mountain air here! The outdoor activities are plenty. Canoing, Camping across the lake, mountain hiking, mountain biking, Sailing, windsurfing, Swimming. We often eat suppers on the beach when it is warm enough and can introduce you to our community that way. We also make trips across the lake for camping of exploring.

There will be time to gain relationships with our family and friends in the community to know our town better and relate to our culture.

There is also local music events, workshops, mushroom festivals, visits to other towns in area.

We are interested in learning about other cultures and teaching our children about different foods, music and culture.

  • Help

    Help

Both me and my partner work part-time and swap time spent on our land. There are tasks building up the soil of our garden, building fences, clearing the forest debris, and landscaping.

There could also be work in the house with cooking, cleaning, and adventuring with our three boys. (Beach, skatepark, mountain biking and canoeing/sailing)

There are two small living spaces being built and there could be small tasks in their renovations.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our house is a 20-30 min walk to town through a forest path. There would be bikes to borrow for transportation. Also car rides are 5min to town.

There are many events in Kaslo, restaurants and local workshops. There is a yoga centre 5 min walk at a neighbours studio. There is also a local Facebook page to stay connected to community events. Very friendly community!

We have a energetic dog that loves to go for walks in our back woods and our land backs onto some lovely trails with views of the lake.

Our boys are very much interested in anything on wheels. They love to create jumps in the woods and ride down to the beautiful skatepark every day. Our 12 year old homeschooler loves to make create building/electrical projects and our land has a lot of materials and bike parts to play with.

May there is a local community festival. first weekend of August there is a local Jazzfestival. In the Fall there is a Mushroom festival. (and lots of picking if the season is good.
