    Description

Hello dear future volunteer, great that you are interested in our place. Let’s try to give you a good impression of what expects you when you come to work here :

    URGENT:

At this moment in time we are offering two long term positions additionally to our regular volunteering scheme.

    - An Aupair style position for a sweet person that wants to integrate into the family and enjoys playing, communicating and caretaking.
We are both working at home, so you will be rarely alone with the children but since we are raising six of them, an additional adult would be great!

-long term shepherd and farm hand. This position does not require previous experience but someone that can work independently and reliably. Big part of this position is to spend time with our goats in the beautiful countryside that we are located in but also some help with cleaning and maintenance of the animals as well as watering.

We reside on an off-grid farm 3km out of the nearest village and 20km away from the nearest city (Castelo Branco). The work includes accomodation and food, a long time position can also include pocket money according to individual arrangement

What kind of place is this?
It is the home of a 8-headed family, a small heard of goats, loads of ducks and chickens, a few cats and dogs and many olive trees.
We raise and educate six children, live in houses that we built ourselves, work the garden and for most of the year are fully self sustainable when it comes to animal products.
If you are as exited as us about this very real and intense way of life, this is for you!

What kind of work is there to be done?
Between kids and farm, we basically have a 24/7 job, but we are our own bosses so with this comes the possibility to focus on areas that are of higher interest to each person. There are a few main areas to work and learn :
    - Gardening
    - Animal care (especially the goats)
    - Household and cooking (we really love good food )
    - Natural construction
    - Food processing (dairy products, preserves bread baking....)
    - Any kind of creative and inspiring activities with the kids (ages 17,15,13,6, 3 and 1)

    What about accommodation?
Short term volunteers are sleeping in their own tent if they have (if not we can provide). For volunteers on the long term programme we are offering a caravan if available. Also there is a communal outdoor kitchen that can be used at any time and a cosy roundhouse to spend comfortable downtime when it’s wet or cold.

How does it work with the meals?
For short term volunteers : breakfast is on your own terms in the communal kitchen. Otherwise we work on a “we work together, we eat together “ principle. That means that on days that you come and work, you will eat with the family. If you want the day/s off, you take care of your own needs.
For long term programme : we will make individual arrangements that best fulfil everyone’s needs, both regarding workload and food requirements.
Good to know : even though most of our meals can be adapted to vegetarians, our kitchen itself is not vegetarian.

What do I need to bring?
    - Comfy clothes
    - Outdoor shoes
    - Sleeping bag
    - Head torch
    - In winter rain jacket
    - Tent if possible
    - Biodegradable toiletries
    - Enthusiasm for working, learning and open communication

    Long term programme :
We offer a special long term programme for people that would like to come for several months or longer. The idea is to become additional adult on the farm and a part of or family. Conditions, boarding and pocket money are subject to individual arrangements according to everyone’s needs and capacities.
