    Description

Close to the small town of Logan Lake BC and 50 minutes from a larger central BC town of Kamloops, I have about 30 sled dogs on 26 acres in the middle of the highland valley plateau in British Columbia. It is very quiet here! There is no shopping, movies or restaurants!! Just birds song, the wind in the trees and dogs.! Our dogs are wonderful friendly loving animals. I spend lots of time exercising them, and loving them up in the off season.
Also on the property are chickens, sheep and goats.
Kamloops and surrounding area is in the dry interior of British Columbia. It is ranching country, with lots of grasslands, lakes, and pine and fir forests. .Wild horses roam here, . It can get very hot in the summer but the property is high, (4000 feet) so it cools off most nights. In September, it is not uncommon to see early morning ( 5 am) temperatures of below freezing, with noon day temps as high as 25 degrees celsius. This is Big Sky country, with wild sunsets and fantastic star gazing.

HABITAT CHANGE In the summer of 2021 the Treemont Widlfire roared thru our homestead and left a path of destruction in it's wake. Our lovely pine forests are burned now, and the land is in the process of recovery. The aspen trees are leaping to the forefront in this process.

You will benefit by experiencing a remote rural BC property. But most importatly, you will be immersed in the world of working and racing sled dogs. Sleddogs are an enormous part of our Canadian heritage. There's lots to learn about these amazing dogs. I have 35 years experience as a full time musher, and am ready to share this with you.

    Hi!
My little oasis is primarily a sleddog kennel, but with other critters on the side. A few chickens, goats and sheep round out the menagerie. I
In the winter my dogs do some tours in Lake Louise Alberta, some racing in the west , and next spring they're planning a 500 mile camping trip in the Arctic. There are 14 younger dogs, and about 14 retirees who are languishing about and collecting their pension. They are all big goofballs... very friendly, some shy, some extroverted..... but all absolutely lovely and endlessly entertaining.
Days are spent getting them out for some exercise ( just free running in the summertime) brushing them, feeding them and loving them up. They have their own swimming pool and take full advantage of it in the hot summer months.
I also have goats, sheep and some chickens. The goats and sheep love to go for walks with you and love a good scratch and visit too.
There is lawn mowing and weed wacking to do, and I am in the process of cleaning up the land after a wildfire...., cutting blowdown and making burn piles for winter burning.
Dog houses all need a spruce up with fresh paint this year.... Dogs have been asking! .

I usually cut out late afternoon to go for a swim in Stake Lake, a short drive away. Then it's cocktail hour on the deck and a nice dinner while enjoying all the birds.
There's a sauna to sweat out all the country dirt if you so wish. Alternatively, indoor and outdoor shower available.
There is also a large library of great literature, and Canadian northern adventure stories.

    A little about me
I have recently retired from running a very busy dog sledding tour business, and am now just enjoying my small furry crew and a quieter pace of life, I have always loved dogs and first ran a dog team in 1993 and it was a "Hell Ya!" moment for me.!
At the time I was a back country ski guide, and dedicated climber and whitewater paddler. I gave it up for the dogs and became a full time musher., which consumers my time in the winters. In the summer, I now love to ride any one of my many bikes and grow as many flowers as I can. I am a foodie. and love to eat delicious creative meals.
I have travelled fairly extensively and look forward to more of this in the future.
I love to share my knowledge, and Canadian culture, with visitors from abroad. And I Iove to hear about your country and customs and interests.

    What else ...

I ask that volunteers are non smokers, and they MUST LOVE DOGS! The dogs are mostly what it is all about.
I also ask that volunteers commit to at least a month. . . The dogs need time to get to know and trust you.
