  • Description

We are currently looking for a someone (single or couple) to help with some outdoor chores from mid April to June. We might also get you to housesit for a couple of weeks during that period.

We are a retired couple living off grid in rural Manitoba, trying to keep our carbon footprint to a minimum. We use solar energy for our electrical needs and rainwater for washing. We have an organic garden and full woodworking shop. We are situated on a private lake perfect for canoeing or kayaking. We live on a quarter section of land (160 acres) which is mostly bush and lake. There is an abundance of wildlife around including deer, moose, beavers and migratory birds. We have a number of hiking trails through the property.
We built an energy efficient home but still have a few projects to complete, mostly gardening, landscaping and trailwork.
We have been vegetarian for 40 years and vegan for over 9 years. Darlene teaches whole food plant based cooking and Ken enjoys cabinet making and building. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren living across Canada.

Travelers will experience and learn about living off grid, using solar energy, using rainwater as the primary source of water supply, and building with raw materials. We have a large organic garden and greenhouse. We practice regenerative/permiculture growing techniques to provide food for us, the birds and bees and for the soil.

As we are vegan, we will introduce travelers to a nutritious, and delicious way to prepare food, without the use of animal products. Darlene is a whole food plant based cooking instructor and has a certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from the T Colin Campbell Center of Nutritional Studies and eCornell. She would love to share her knowledge and recipes with you. We bake bread in a wood stove and an outdoor clay oven, using fresh ground organic grains locally sourced. Learn how to cook from scratch, make kombucha, sauerkraut, my own version of KimChi and vegan cheese.

Our philosophy is to live as lightly on the land as possible, reducing our carbon footprint and embracing sustainable living principles.

  • Help

Looking for an off grid experience? - we require a responsible person or couple to help cut a trail to an area of deadfall, which we would like to harvest for firewood. For part of the time, we may be away so you might also be required to housesit for us. Help will include keeping the house heated (we have a wood stove), walking the dog and taking care of the cat. A fully stocked fridge, freezer and pantry will be provided (plant based) for you to prepare your own meals. Ideally we would like someone to stay for mid April to June.

  • Accommodation

Workaways have the option of staying in a guest bedroom in the house, or, if more privacy is preferred, a guest bedroom above the woodworking shop. Guests will have access to WiFi and satellite TV in the house, but not in the shop. The house is equipped with a fully functioning bathroom with a shower, composting toilet & sink. However we do encourage guests to use our outhouse whenever possible. We have a modern washing machine , but clothes are hung on a clothesline to dry. Since we are off grid, power consumption is determined by the sun. ie; no blowdryers, hairstaighteners or anything else with an element, until the batteries are fully charged. We have no land line phone but cell phone service is decent. We will provide all meals, which will be whole food, plant based.

We live in picturesque rural Manitoba, approximately 30 minutes from Riding Mountain National Park which offers horseback riding, nature trails, and a beautiful lake. We are 10 minutes from the small town of Sandy Lake which has swimming, boating, restaurant, bar, golf course and a museum. Sandy Lake is also located right on the Cross Canada trail. Lake Audy, about 30 minutes away, has an enclosure where bison can be seen roaming free in their natural habitat. Our own property offers hiking trails and a lake, guest will have access to a canoe, kayaks and bikes. Possibilities exist to use our vehicle, if necessary. We do not allow smoking on the property. We have a dog and cat, both very friendly and both live in the house, so no allergies please.

We are rather secluded, so best suited for those who want a retreat like atmosphere. Enjoy the peace and quiet, birdwatch, meditate, do yoga on the deck overlooking the lake, read or bike the quiet country roads. We have guitars and a keyboard for those who are musically inclined and wish to play and or sing with Ken. We would prefer a couple, but are open to individuals who are interested in off grid living, sustainable living and willing to explore plant based eating.

We are willing to pick you up at the Winnipeg or Brandon Airport, or bus terminals and return you there after your stay.
