We happily find ourselves on a beautiful remote island off of the coast of British Columbia, Canada where we are entirely off the grid and reached only by boat or floatplane. Here we are stumbling, bumbling, and laughing our way hopefully towards a sustainable community of creative, energetic and hard working family and friends. We currently run a small marina facility as well as a small pub/cafe. Each August we also host a Music Festival which has become a major jam session involving musicians from all over the pacific northwest. With help from all of you we have built two cottages, rebuilt a laundry room, constructed a generator shed/workshop, put in a veggie garden, added a beehive as well as a chicken coop. Workaway helpers have aided in starting a new water system, pouring a cement pad for a treatment room, and helped to maintain our extensive veggie garden.
However, we´ve barely scratched the surface. We have a new fresh-water system to finish, three small cabins, another cottage, a community center/outdoor kitchen to build, as well as gardens to expand.......... a small lumber mill?......... bees?...... goats?............ a sauna?...........a treehouse?.......an art gallery?........ it goes on and on,.... boggles the mind really.
Cynthia and myself live here year round and we are joined each summer by a group of new and returning "family members" who come here to the bay and spend a couple of days, weeks, or even months building, clearing, ploughing, and laughing with us. I do not believe now that we could live here without your help and we will look forward to another summer coming that will see us meet new friends and accomplish much together. This years projects include the building of a new cottage, design and installation of a new solar/hydro electrical system, as well as finishing touches to a new fresh water delivery system. This spring we will be needed help with the cottage construction, brush clearing, and the planting of the veggies.
Now in early spring 2015 we could use help re-building our dam that supplies our micro-hydro with water. There is always spring cleaning and brush clearing to do. Lots of garden work as well.
We thank you so much for your interest and we hope to see you soon!

Helping with Tourists
We do not adhere to strict work schedules at here. You will see what is expected of you by sharing in the work of all. Helpers will always have spare time to hike, kayak, fish, or any other leisure that they may desire. We generally start the day after everyone has surfaced and had some morning nourishment. You are not required to rise at any given time. You will have your own accommodation and will be expected to make your own meals some of the time.. We will spend much time laughing together,.... it is unavoidable.
The accommodation varies depending on the time of the year, but always inside and warm.
In the late 1800’s our bay was the most populated place on the coast and home to a thriving gold mining industry, logging camp, and fishing fleet. The towns 164 city-sized lots are still titled and are just one part of our 165 acre property. The townsite was of course along the waterfront where there is a 600 foot pier that provides moorage for our own as well as visiting boats. The pier and dock are virtually the only sign of the town that was.
