Description
Hello,
My name is Stefan and I'm living with my 26 Alaskan Huskies and some puppies just below the article circle in Finnish Lappland. Approximately 45min outside of Rovaniemi the "capital" of Lappland and home to Santa Claus.
It's a quite and remote area with a lot of forest, lakes and Kemijoki the longest river in Finnland just 5km away.
The property is in the forest and directly located on a big lake.
Even though it's remote the next supermarket & coffee is only 4km away. -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
You will get the possibility to learn a lot about sleddogs and dogs in general, how to work with them, take care of them and train them. Also how to drive a sled yourself and of course ice fishing if you want to learn this as this is really big here in northern Finland. There are really good fishing possibilities around here in lakes as well as in rivers. I have a kajak and fishing equipment that you are free to use. I'm doing normal fishing with the rod as well as net fishing. Both for us to eat as well as for the dogs.
Next to this I can teach you about the Nordic lifestyle, fishing, a lot of hiking, picking berries and mushrooms in autumn. And conserving them for the winter. -

Help
Overall almost every task is related to dogs,
Tasks included feeding dogs, cleaning the fences, brushing dogs, playing and socializing the puppies and taking them for walks, leash training, preparing dog snacks etc. A big part of the Huskies diet is fish and meat so you should be okay to handle raw and defrosted meat and and frozen fish. Also some work that is needed around a small farm like help with cleaning snow and making firewood or preparing trails for winter.
In autumn, October to end of November the dogs will be trained in front of a ATV. As soon as there is enough snow, usually in the beginning of December we are changing to sleds and the work with tourists starts.
Your job will be to support me around the dogs, especially with the puppies as they demand a lot of attention. During winter season you will join me two to three times a week to my workplace to help me taking care of the dogs.
Payment will be 11 euros per hour for the dog handling jobs, in case your interested in guiding private tours, this will be paid with 14 euros per hour.
Preference is giving to someone who can stay from November to end of April as it takes some time to get to know the dogs and it is also more easy for the dogs to work with the same person over the winter.

Accommodation
Accommodation will be a own room in a shared house or in a campervan just next to the house.
-
What else ...
Minimum age 19 years old.
Please remember this is relatively remote area. It's a plus if you have a own car but you can also use mine or the bus to go to town if I don't need it.
Anyway you should be fine with not going to town multiple times a week. It's a place for people who like the outdoors and the nature.
No smoking allowed as I don't think that's good for the dogs, same for heavy drinking!
Dogs go first, so I hope you don't mind getting dog hair on your clothes. Almost everyday there's at least one, sometimes up to 5 dogs inside the house.
No own pets (dogs, cats...) please. -
