    Description

Our farm is in the province of Yilan County (one hours by train from both Taipei and Hualien) and has been producing tea for generations. Since childhood, my family and I have lived and worked together with nature and the local town to live a self-sufficient life. My parents are experienced and very esteemed farmers, and their tea making techniques are very revered. At 400m altitude, far away from any factories, our 9 acre farm uses a long history of organic methods to primarily produce green tea, as well as bitter tea tree seeds, pineapples and rice. We learn and cooperate with nature, and insist on keeping our land as eco-friendly as possible. We also hope to exchange experiences with those who have great interest and love for farming. We hope you will feel at home here at our farm working together with us. We welcome you to join and exchange your cultures with us.

    Average helping Day for Volunteers
As Yilan County can get very hot during the day I prefer to start early (roughly 5am onwards) and help for 2-5 hours, depending on the weather and the jobs that need doing. My apartment is located within Luodong township so every morning we take a short 15 minutes drive to the farm, located near the Sanxing mountains. We usually pick up breakfast on the way! Lunch and dinner is also provided later in the day. This gives you plenty of time after the tasks to explore Yilan County.
Make sure to bring a long sleeved shirt and long pants to avoid the mosquito bites during the farm help. I usually have mosquito spray but best bring some of your own as well.

    December - February
Because it is much colder during these months, there is not a lot of farm work to do. However, I am still happy to bring in guests to help around the apartment and farm.

    March - August
As we prepare for another harvest season, I will need help maintaing the farm. This typically includes weeding, moving branches and other general farm chores.

    September - October
We need help with harvesting bitter tea tree seeds. Every day after harvesting the seeds we need to let them dry in the sun. Our bitter tea tree seeds are small and takes lots of time to harvest. The rest of the time is to learn to grow fruits or vegetables.
From this year, we've begun to use machines to harvest our seeds. You will be assisting in using the machines and collecting the harvest, as well as place the seeds to dry under the sun.

November - After the harvest season, we need to once again maintain the farm before the Winter months.

    Accommodation

I live in a cozy apartment on the edge of Luodong Township, away from the family farm. There is a large bedroom big enough for couple to stay in, as well as a smaller single bed available. We tend to all hang out in the living room during the evening, watching TV or listening to music and reading.

We are all vegetarian and put together delicious vegetarian dishes using our self-grown rice, vegetables and many kind of fruits. You can also enjoy drinking our freshly brewed tea.

I do have a bicycle which you are free to borrow at any time!

Yilan is surrounded by high mountains over 3000m and facing the Pacific Ocean. Yilan is a place with spectacular scenery, with plentiful fresh water and friendly people. It rains a lot, but that offers a very spectaculer foggy scenery. Helpers can visit many places with their time off. Such as Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area, Cueifong Lake Circle Trail, National Center for Traditional Arts, Dongshan River Water Park , Luodong Sports Park and Yilan Forest Recreation Area. Also Jiaoxi Hot Spring and Suao Cold Spring are nearby.
