Description
My wife Penny and I as well as our little Mexican dog live in an old, but renovated, house in Powell River and we are looking to build a Tiny home/guest cabin on our property as a test home for a 200 unit Tiny home project for the homeless here. We are both retired and wish to have a permanent place for help as we age while at the same time creating a template to solve the homeless problem.
Powell River is a piece of paradise with great opportunities for indigenous culture and festivals; we are famous for our music academy, our choirs and our symphony music academy.
We are surrounded by 32 lakes, countless bike trails and all the pleasures of the coast. We have a beautiful garden and koi pond.
Our activities are yoga, tai chi, bike riding and walks in the woods.
Our daily walk brings us into contact with homeless people in the woods nearby. As a result I have formed a non-profit society with the mission of building 200 Tiny homes for the homeless and for the precariously housed. We help the local homeless by removing their garbage and by listening to them and helping where we can.
The Tiny home we are planning for our own property will be a template for the larger enterprise of providing homes for the homeless here.
We are basing our Society model on one in Fredericton. We have no website as yet and someone with that kind of expertise would be useful. -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are actively involved with undertaking building a tiny home community for the unhoused many of whom are First Nations. This is a community based project which Michael is spearheading. Powell River is on the traditional territory of the Tla’amin Nation. Visitors learn that this area has been a homeland for thousands of years and the local population has a vast store of knowledge about caring for the land and resources for future generations. While the historical relationship with this community has been nothing less than tragic, strong efforts are in place to rebuild relationships and mutually prosper. With the proper introduction a respectful exchange could introduce a visitor to Tla'amin teachings, language, stories, ceremonies and connections.
We are very connected to the yoga, tai chi and Qi Gong community and have had a lot of experience travelling abroad mainly for meditation retreats. Presently, Penny volunteers at MCC, a local thrift store. Our skill set include carpentry, plumbing and electrical work as well as gardening and very healthy eating. We enjoy riding our bikes around town.
We hope to share our skillset and enhance our place of tranquility that supports birds and all of nature. We coexist with the deer, bear and raccoons in our neighbourhood. -

Help
We are both longtime Vipassana meditators and we are always pleased to share information and techniques of meditation with others. We have a dedicated meditation space which we are happy to share.
To be more clear about what we need help with, I should tell you that I am 79 and my wife is 70 years old. The main thing we need help with is maintaining our garden with weeding, pruning and mowing. We also need help with some maintenance projects around the house, and occasionally heavy lifting ( moving firewood for example).
The charitable society project is still in its early stages and we could use someone to help build the website. -

What else ...
We live in the heart of Powell River close to all amenities including hospital, rec complex, trails and shopping. Public transport is very close by.
The local Tla'amin First nation have a number of beautiful new buildings in traditional style.
There are a great many musical offerings available here and we have the oldest movie theatre in Canada. Mountain biking is very popular here; we host a part of the BC Bike race. Many people go fishing here for Salmon, cod and many other species.
There is a famous canoe route connecting 6 lakes and it takes a week to complete.
Powell River was created as a company town over 100 years ago and has many interesting buildings, our own house being one of them built in 1914. -
