    Description

    Welcome to our small little paradise in Palmar Sur!

    *Important Note*: We prefer volunteers who can stay at least a month. Please feel free to reach out either way, but priority will be given to those who can stay longer.

    What do you think about... ?
    -> Family
    -> Minimalism
    -> Self-efficacy
    -> Sustainability

    Well, these are the first words that popped into the head of one of our volunteers. And they match us neatly!

    We are a close knit family who lives on a farm with 3 wooden houses. All of them were built by ourselves and we actually were living without electricity for numerous years. Not to worry, now we are connected to the grid and to the world wide web as well. Anyways, we 5 hectares of paradise where we grow bananas, avocados, yuca, papayas, pineapple, cashew... among many other crops. In the garden you can observe various species of colourful birds including macaws, mot mots and chocuacos. Our family of grandma, nephew, brother, (visiting) children and my beautiful wife is completed by our goats, sheeps, dogs, chickens, ducks and cats. We run the farm as a family and do not have any employees! As a volunteer, you'll become part of the family and help with various farm-related tasks: gardening, animal care, picking fruit, cutting with machetes ("chapear" in Costa Rica!). You can learn how to farm, plant, build and run a goat barn! ;)

    * IMPORTANT: Volunteers have the option to contribute $5000 Colones (= $9USD) per day for food expenses, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus great coffee and snacks in between.
    This is NOT MANDATORY, and if you do not wish to pay this fee, you can provide your own meals, cooking them in our equipped kitchen.

    ================

    ¡Bienvenido a nuestro pequeño paraíso en Palmar Sur!

    *Nota Importante*: Preferimos voluntarios que pueden quedarse al menos un mes. Favor no dude en ponerse en contacto con nosotros, pero vamos a dar prioridad a las personas que pueden quedarse por un tiempo más largo.

    ¿Qué te parece ... ?
    -> Familia
    -> Minimalismo
    -> Autoeficacia
    -> Sostenibilidad

    Estas son las primeras palabras que se le ocurrieron a uno de nuestros voluntarios. Y encajan perfectamente con nosotros.
    Somos una familia muy unida que vive en una granja con tres casas de madera. Todas las construimos nosotros mismos y, de hecho, estuvimos viviendo sin electricidad durante muchos años. No hay que preocuparse, ahora estamos conectados a la red y también a Internet. De todos modos, tenemos 5 hectáreas de paraíso donde cultivamos plátanos, aguacates, yuca, papayas, piña, anacardos... entre otros muchos cultivos. Nuestra familia de abuela, sobrino, hermano, hijos (de visita) y mi bella esposa se completa con nuestras cabras, ovejas, perros, gallinas, patos y gatos. Dirigimos la granja como una familia y no tenemos empleados. Como voluntario, formarás parte de la familia y ayudarás en diversas tareas relacionadas con la granja: jardinería, cuidado de animales, recogida de fruta, corte con machete ("chapear" en Costa Rica). Podrás aprender a cultivar, plantar, construir y gestionar un establo de cabras ;)

    *IMPORTANTE: Los voluntarios tiene la opcion de contribuir con $5000 colones (= $9USD) por dia para cubrir todas las comidas (desayuno, almuerzo y cena, plus cafe y snacks)
    Esto NO ES OBLIGATORIO, si no quieres pagar esta fee, te puedes preparar tus propias comidas en nuestra cocina.

    Everyone who comes learns about running a goat barn, wood construction, Spanish (!) and agriculture without chemicals. Needless to say that you'll get to experience a true Tico family and our culture. As already mentioned above: There are many tropical fruits that can be made into drinks such as sugarcane juice, cashew juice, starfruit, and if you come during avocado harvest season you can enjoy them as well.

    At the heart of your experience is a welcoming family that loves cultural exchange and making friends from other countries.

    Todos los que vienen aprenden a llevar un establo de cabras, a construir con madera, español (!) y agricultura sin productos químicos. No hace falta decir que usted tendrá la oportunidad de experimentar una verdadera familia Tica y nuestra cultura. Como ya se ha mencionado anteriormente, hay muchas frutas tropicales que se pueden convertir en bebidas, como el zumo de caña de azúcar, el zumo de anacardo, la carambola, y si vienes durante la temporada de cosecha del aguacate también podrás disfrutar de ellas.

    En el corazón de tu experiencia está una familia acogedora a la que le encanta el intercambio cultural y hacer amigos de otros países.

    Being proactive is a great asset here! You have the freedom to shape the small world of goats, sheeps, dogs, cats, chicken ... our family and most importantly yourself.

    Technically speaking, we expect volunteers to help improving the goat barn, maintaining the property with all its plants, receiving guests for our two wooden lodges, managing Booking & rentals, and most importantly singing karaoke with us (don't feel pressured, even a German 1st soccer league player showed is talent here) ;-D

    UPDATE: We are opening a new space for a person with a big heart and a lot of passion for the care and accompaniment of our grandma! We are very busy with the work on our farm, that is why we would love to find someone for our grandma as she is an essential part of our family. The volunteer should help with her personal care and matters such as cleaning, preparing food, helping with her bath, etc. She needs someone to spend the day with, take care of her, talk and entertain her! She is 87 years old and needs some accompaniment in her daily life. She is living in her own cabana right next to us. She is a very familiar, lovely and funny grandma and she likes to play cards. We look for people who already have some experience working with or taking care of seniors. The minimum stay for this volunteer position would be for 1 month. Please, specify it in your message if you want to apply for this position and explain why would you like to work with our grandma.

    ¡Ser proactivo es una gran ventaja aquí! Usted tiene la libertad para dar forma al pequeño mundo de cabras, ovejas, perros, gallinas, gatos, pollo ... nuestra familia y lo más importante usted mismo.

    Técnicamente hablando, esperamos que los voluntarios para ayudar a mejorar el establo de cabras, el mantenimiento de la propiedad con todas sus plantas, la recepción de los huéspedes para nuestros dos casas de madera, la gestión de reservas y online rentals y lo más importante cantar karaoke con nosotros (no se sienta presionado, incluso un jugador de la 1a liga de fútbol alemana mostró su talento aquí) ;-D

    ACTUALIZACIÓN: Abrimos una nueva vacante como voluntario para una persona con un gran corazón y pasión por el cuidado de personas mayores! Concretamente, buscamos a una persona que pueda acompañar a nuestra abuelita de 87 años, la cual necesita cuidados personales tales como prepararle comida, asearla, cambiarla, etc. Ella necesita a alguien con quien pueda pasar el día, cuidarla, hablar con ella y entretenerla u ocuparla en su día a día. Por nuestro trabajo en la granja estamos muy ocupados, por eso nos encantaría encontrar a una persona que pase tiempo con nuestra abuela, ya que ella es una parte fundamental de nuestra familia. La abuelita vive de forma independiente en su propia cabaña junto a la nuestra. Ella es muy cariñosa, familiar y divertida a la que le gusta jugar a las cartas o hacer diferentes actividades. Estamos buscando a alguien con experiencia laboral o con el cuidado de familiares mayores. La estancia mínima para esta vacante es de 1 mes. Por favor, especifique en su mensaje si desea postularse para esta vacante y explique el por qué le gustaría trabajar con nuestra abuelita.

    You are staying in the volunteers house, where you will have your own room with mosquito nets. Besides that, the volunteer house has a shared bathroom & shower, a "living room" and a small veranda. If you want to cook something besides the three dishes we provide per day, you can get your groceries in Palmar Norte and you are able to cook your own dishes. You can easily join us when we drive to town, borrow one of our bikes, or take the public bus coming from Sierpe. As we grow several vegetables and fruits on our property, you can also harvest them for free and cook a dish with local ingredients only.

    Te alojarás en la casa de los voluntarios, donde tendrás tu propia habitación con mosquiteras. Aparte de eso, la casa de voluntarios tiene un baño y una ducha compartidos, una "sala de estar" y un pequeño porche. No podemos proporcionarte comida, pero puedes cocinar tus propios platos en la casa de voluntarios. Recientemente hemos añadido una cocina de gas. Los comestibles se pueden comprar en Palmar Sur o Palmar Norte. Usted puede fácilmente unirse a nosotros cuando nos dirigimos a la ciudad o tomar el autobús público que viene de Sierpe. Como cultivamos varias verduras y frutas en nuestra propiedad, también puede cosecharlas de forma gratuita y cocinar un plato con ingredientes locales solamente.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

    Next to the big attractions of Drake Bay and Corcovado National Park, you can also visit a nearby waterfall and a museum (similar to Stonehenge just smaller). However, expect to have a lot of free time to learn Spanish, read, do sports etc.

    In general, we highly recommend to bring long sleeves, long pants, gloves and (ideally) your own (rubber) boots. Sun protection is a necessity as it gets very sunny around here. A rain jacket does help with the occasional downpour of rain (depends on the season, rainy season is "rainy").
