I’m a 26-year-old professional photographer based in Philadelphia, with a passion for people, culture, food, music, and travel. Capturing the world through both digital and analog formats brings me immense fulfillment. When I’m not behind the camera, you can find me staying active—whether it’s through a jog or a yoga session. I love to cook and garden - even though I am most definitely an amateur at both!

We are so incredibly late on our feedback for Heyner but think of him and the family always!

This was my (James) first Workaway experience and I could not have dreamed of a better way to start! Our 3 weeks on Heyner’s farm flew by quicker than we could have ever imagined. The beautiful, picturesque mornings sharing breakfast and coffee with the… read more family, the days chasing after goats and sheep (not to mention cleaning up after them), and the INCREDIBLE meals Jenny cooked made this the most amazing experience anyone could dream of!

The work was easy and not very demanding - waking up to a delicious breakfast and coffee each morning definitely made it easier! The sheep and goats were always giving us a laugh so it was fun to spend time with them. Even cleaning up the pens was fun with the right attitude! The rest of our work was making sure the other animals had water and food, we dug a trench to move water off the grass, accompanied Heyner into the jungle to cut down some trees, and even helped carry a huge metal bridge we had built! The work varied, was never difficult, was fun with Heyner and Miguel there, and made us feel like we were truly helping to further the cause. To be honest, I miss those mornings now that I’m back home!

The property was amazingly beautiful - the views, the sunlight, the sound of the rain falling into the roof - I miss it everyday. The guest house (in which we painted a mural!) was properly set up with everything we needed and really cozy! Spending our free time with the family is also something we think of often - Jenny’s cooking, Miguel’s laugh, Heyner’s karaoke, Fernando’s jokes - we miss them all dearly. Jenny’s cooking is worth THREE TIMES what you will pay for it so definitely make sure to take her up on the offer. Heyner’s presence is so joyous, comedic, and light hearted; Miguel is such an animated, kind hearted person who taught us a lot of Spanish and shared a lot of jokes with us; Jenny was so warm and welcoming, her presence radiated kindness - they make this experience what it is.

Definitely do the trip to Corcavado, it’s also so easy to take the bus from town to Uvita (amazing views and awesome surf lessons), it’s also a great place to use to get to Bahia Drake. I could write an entire essay on our time here but I’ll leave you with this -

Heyner and his family are true, welcoming, pure hearted people with a passion for their land and those they come into contact with. Their kindness, openness, and passion have left a mark on me forever. If you have the chance to stay here, do not think twice - you will regret missing the chance for the rest of your life.
