Description
I am Rosemary and I love children. I believe that God provides for all and try to help in his name where I can in the communities I live in. The bible and the Christian prophecy are very important to me and I would appreciate volunteers who share and/or those believes.
In 2013 I started with the Sango school in my parents' home to provide free schooling for the who could not go to school before. The school started with 7 children and at this moment there are 70 children.
Meanwhile I had moved to Kisumu center and started the sewing project in a rental house on the compound where I live. About 8 trainees and 4 professionals are working there now. I also have a shop at Dunga Hill Camp and Kiboko Bay Casa, where we sell our sewing products to support our Charity Schools.
In 2021 an area chief and church leaders informed me that there was a need for a kindergarten in the rural town of Kisumu and so I opened another school there. There are now about 50 children in that school.
I would love to have volunteers working beside me in this very rewarding work. Maybe you can play with the children, help preparing and providing food or help the sewing ladies. I can provide accommodation in both school compounds and you can join the children for their meals. Of course you can use the kitchen if you want to make more meals for yourself, I can provide the food for you. Volunteers helping with the sewing project would have accomodation and meals in my house on the compound. Bring your culture and your creative self and join us, we would love to meet you.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
You can see that our culture is very flexible, what the children are required to do and to learn. The children are very eager to learn and will appreciate anything they can learn from you. The same goes for the men and women you meet. Volunteers can visit my home and have a home cooked Kenya meal, learn to cook Kenya meals. At the schools you are directly amidst the local community and you can learn about their lives, visit their markets. You can visit the markets in Kisumu or Mamboleo. In Kisumu town you can visit the beaches along Lake Victoria and see life bands at Dunga Hill Camp, take a boat ride or visit impala-park or the Kisumu Museum, watch the hippos get out of the lake at Hippopoint at sunset or sunrise.
In Sango you can watch the fishermen and learn about their lives by social interaction. Here the country-site is magnificent as you will see in the pictures. If you like to live in a beautiful landscape in a peaceful community, you will love it.
Help
I would like the volunteers to play with the children, read storybooks to the children, maybe help preparing foods, help the ladies in the sewing workplace or do the sewing yourself. Especially in the School in Mamboleo/Kisumu we could use some help. There are always things in and about the house and schools that need fixing, if you like doing that or make playthings for the children, teach them how to make a kite or whatever skill you would like to bring. Everybody has talents and can inspire the children, who will love to meet you.
We can teach you how to sew and our native language. We hope to learn from you as well, all skills and languages are very much welcome. Let's share our knowledge and skills.

Accommodation
In Sango we have a three bedroom house for the volunteers with a kitchen, shower and flush toilet, electricity, running water, wifi and a large compound.
In Kisumu there is a two bedroom house, wifi, shower, toilets, running water, electricity. (no photo's yet)
Breakfast and lunch will be provided, they can also use the kitchen if they want to prepare meals for themselves, we can provide the food for them.
Volunteers for the sewing project would stay in my house on the compound and share my meals, there will always be food in the kitchen for them.
What else ...
Our only rule is respect the people you are staying with and their believes and no smoking in the houses. You can smoke in the designated areas. If you want to go anywhere or learn about local transport, please let us know and we will help you get there or we can think of fun things to do or share.
In Sango the schoolcompound is directly situated on the beautiful lake Victoria, you can see the fishing boats, ask them for a ride... In Kisumu you can visit Impala Parc, Dunga Beach, Hippo Point any many more, you will have plenty of time for that, especially as the schools are from 9.00-12.00 hrs and you will have the afternoons to yourself. For the tailorshop, let us know what hours you would like to help.
