Description
We live in the centre of Rome, just 200mt from the underground stop “Ponte Lungo” Metro line A, and near the train station "Tuscolana" and just 50mt to the bus stop "Alberone" and taxi rank, so very well connected. Our house is in a strategic position to visit the city and the country. In our area you can find everything: shops, cinema, parks, bars, restaurants, gym center... The Colosseum is 6 stops away by subway, only 40 minutes by walk.
We have a son, Emanuele, a boy who is 10 y.o. . He goes to international school, where he learns spanish, french, german and english of course.
HE IS FLUENT IN ENGLISH and in Italian. He started to learn some arabic too.
I’m Lucia, the mum, 44 years old, professional skydiver, selfless, with sense of humor and sociable.
Because Stefano (the dad) works full time from Monday until Sunday without a fixed timetable, even at night, we don’t have a fixed schedule each week.
Stefano is 61 y.o. and he works in a Rai television like a journalist and in radio Radiosei for S.S.Lazio, and other networks like Mediaset Italia 1 and SkyItalia. He's in many television shows and he was a technical director of the Italian sports dance (FIDS). He's a fencing World Champion, and he's a technical director of the italian fencing team. He's Chief Inspector of the State Police. He teaches historical fencing and scenic fencing to actors for musicals and theatre. He's a member of the CONI as a presenter of events and award ceremonies. He's a professor at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome in the Faculty of Sports Science. For charitable purposes Stefano plays football with the Italian National Actors Association.
We have two cats, Tiger and Tyson.
Emanuele wakes up at 7:00/7:30 am. He has a dinner at 7:00/7:30 pm. He goes to bed at 8:30/9:00pm. He goes to school from Monday to Friday, which starts at 8:00 am, and he is out at 4:00 pm. He’s attending the middle school, grade 1.
Emanuele is lovely and very funny...:) ( even if he has his moments of "protest"!...)
He loves to build Lego and others things, Geomag magnetic, Magformers, Gravitrax, CHESS, reading books by Francesca Simon, playing with PlayDoh, playing hide and seek and run ... he's very playful and creative. He plays with railways and trains, cars and trucks, marble race. He loves to play "pretend", inventing stories with puppets, and play role-plays. He loves the books about weather, atmospheric phenomena, thunderstorms, storms, hailstorms, snowdrifts, hurricanes, tornadoes... he's interested in tsunami, earthquakes, volcanoes, space and solar system, and moon and meteorites! Besides astronomy, geography and science, he likes coding, scratch, numbers and MATHS.
He's 9 years old, affectionate, sociable, and you'll be his best friend ever :-) so maybe he will look to play with you, even if it's not your working hours... but if you want, you will be part of the family!
We are a very sporty family, funny, active, and easy :)). We love sports, soccer, music, dance, theatre, and the various forms of art.
Stefano and I participate in many charitable and social events ( because of Stefano’s jobs )
Because we work for many hours, our days are always full and lively. We try to dine sometimes with Workawayers ... but almost never that is possible...
when we go out we usually can't bring Emanuele with us so we need that you stay with him, because at 8:30/9:00 pm he sleeps. During the weekend we stay in Rome to work.
We have a true Italian culture and italian customs. We are welcoming, caring and positive people. I hope you will be a friend for us!
We don't smoke.
We speak basic english (and I apologize for the grammar mistakes :-) but at home and with Emi we want to speak only in english ). Emanuele is talkative and good at English.Types of help and learning opportunities

There are many reasons why you should workaway in Rome ... one of these is that if you stay with a local host, like us, you can understand the city as we know it. Because when it comes to cities like Rome, it becomes crucial to have a local friend — to understand the city from inside out.
If you want to know the city and to get great advice about where to go and what to see in Rome, and visit the country, we are definitely the right choice! We know Rome, we live in a great area, and I think the schedule is very good for you, even if it’s changeable. Italy is gorgeous to visit, and Rome is a very beautiful city... The cities of Naples and Florence are so close : just 1 hour by train ( but also Tivoli, Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio, Frascati, Castel Gandolfo, Ostia Antica, Venice, San Marino, Pompeii, Amalfi Cost, Sorrento and Positano...and many other places! )
We have a true italian culture and italian customs, we are welcoming, caring and positive people. We buy good food and we can cook traditional dishes.
In your free time you will either eat at home or go out, the way it pleases you most, just give us prior notice.
Whenever you wish to take off two or three consecutive days (to go and visit another part of Italy, for example) you should just tell us in advance.
I can provide references from my past volunteers hosted or you can read our feedbacks. We have been host family for more than 8 years.Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Help
We would like a volunteer to wide our child’s perspective on the world whilst IMPROVE his already fluent ENGLISH. We would like a workawayer who loves to play with children and who comes here to know Emanuele. Our project is to raise a new generation of people who are multicultural, open minded and understanding.
We want a workawayer who is HONEST, INDEPENDENT, PATIENT with kids and also RESPONSIBLE and RELIABLE, and who is good at time management.
We prefer that you don’t speak Italian.
Emanuele is already fluent in English.
We expect that you SPEAK ONLY in ENGLISH, with immersion, repetition, correction, interaction.
So READ to Emanuele, play with him and teach him new games. When you are working with Emanuele DON'T BE DISTRACTED BY YOUR PHONE or OTHER ACTIVITIES. We ask you not just to be with the child, but to ACTIVELY INTERACT WITH HIM.
We DON’T need “just watching” or long periods of silence! We want a TALKATIVE person.
Sometimes there are specific activities I would like you do, but we would like that you find a way to make your special and personal relationship with him. I would like YOU TO BE INVENTIVE, and it is important that you know HOW TO HAVE FUN WITH HIM. Experience one-on-one with children, tutoring and teaching qualities are a plus (especially with maths, coding, geography, astronomy, chemistry and science. We would love a chess player. ).
We would love for you to be our second-hand person, HELPING with whatever is needed and being a SUPPORT to our family and a person who is fine with staying with Emanuele also at night while we are working, have late dinners, etc. (because going out for events is part of our job...)
I like to have an open relationship with the volunteers I work with, so I want an honest workawayer, with whom I can talk freely. Because direct communication is the right way to make things work ... I prefer not to deal with touchy people, rather I prefer people who are UNDERSTANDING, GENEROUS and UNSELFISH.
Please you consider that your job ( to teach, read, chat, play ) will be with an only child.
We have some more help for housework. Our housekeeper comes one time a week to take care of cleaning the bathrooms, the floors, changing the beds, dusting, cleaning the kitchen ...Monica will clean your room also, like our room.
BUT during the week you should keep our kid’s TOYS IN ORDER.
However, we EXPECT you to vacuum, wash dishes, load and unload the dishwasher, leave the kitchen tidy and clean, and cooperate with us for day to day activities, as if you were at home, possibly even better!
Food is included, but not meals preparation. So, you'll be required to cook for yourself. The meals for Emanuele are provided by me always. Sometimes you will have to reheat them for him. So you will not have to worry about preparing meals for us or for Emanuele never. The same thing for groceries. You will not need to buy groceries. I will do it. For lunch we will not be at home, and for dinner, if we are at home, we have a dinner at 9:00/10:00 pm and not together.
For his work Stefano and l are often invited to parties and events. His working hours are not fixed and I often have to accompany. For this reason our weekly organization changes, so does your timetable. We ask for the maximum FLEXIBILITY. We will often need to rearrange your schedule if plans change. In general we ask that you to be ABLE to PROVIDE for YOURSELF, but at the same time we would like you to be part of our family, sharing our everyday life in an easy and funny way. Usually for the WEEKEND we stay IN ROME to WORK and maybe it will be working time for you too.
Usually Stefano brings Emanuele to school by walking and you pick up Emi from school; I manage morning time and night time preparations.
When the schedule allows it, I will set one time a week for language practice or reading in english for me and you.
An example of your duties :
Morning time:
- playing with him
- Make sure he's ready for activities/school
In the afternoon you have to:
- play with him and to read for him
- dinnertime is around 7:00pm (don’t make dinner, just help him)
- brushing teeth/pajamas/backpack ready for school
Babysitting includes:
- making sure he goes to bed at a proper time (8:30/9:00 pm)
- making sure that the kitchen, the play-areas and the cat litter are tidy (when he sleeps).
We ask that you work 25 hours a week and have a very flexible schedule.Languages
