    Description

We are rebooting our Workaway account after a few years away and in that time we have had two children and moved from a small farm to a large working cattle farm in the Komga district in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience as hosts and we managed to meet some really great people so we're exploring the opportunity to do so again.

We are Vaughn, Pi, Sejr (4) and Signe (2). Vaughn is currently managing a commercial cattle herd on the property with a focus on sustainable and regenerative land and grazing management. Vaughn grew up on the beach and while we now live a bit further from the coast we still try get to the beach a couple of times a month work permitting. He has since taken up trail running to keep fit and healthy and enjoys a good yoga stretch in the evenings.

Pi, the matriarch of the farm, is a do-it-all kind of women. A teacher to our kids, yoga instructor, naturally talented trail runner, master gardener and sour dough bread maker (and much more). She also helps with running the cattle business and no job is too hard for the 'strong mama' of the house.

We have just moved onto the property and into a large old house so there's plenty to maintain, fix up and create as we start to develop around the homestead. We will not limit any volunteer to just working around the homestead so if you would like to learn about cattle farming on a larger scale we can arrange for you to tag along and get stuck into some of the daily chores that the enterprise entails.

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We aim to provide an opportunity for volunteers to indulge in pure farm living. We love to learn more than we like to teach and we enjoy getting insight and viewpoints from all perspectives and that is what Workaway can offer.

We will mostly require basic work around the homestead but can accommodate volunteers to learn about the cattle enterprise is there is interest but generally work could include:
Maintaining and planting of gardens and vegetables
Helping plant new fruit trees with tree protection
Feeding some of the smaller animals around the home like chickens
Helping with some repairs and maintenance around the old house

No expertise is required just a good attitude is all that's needed.

    Accommodation

We live in a large old house that is about 100 years old. Your room will be in the main house but away from the chaos of the kids and fairly private. You will have your own entrance as well.
Meals during the day can be unpredictable with the kids being involved but we always have dinner together. We will provide staples and dinner but we have found its best to collaborate when it comes to food as we will not provide snacks and food in between meals. There will be plenty of fridge and freezer space for you to keep your stuff and we're more than happy to accommodate most diet preferences.

It should be noted that we are on a farm and about 15km from the small farming village of Komga. We will head to town at least once a week and there is a large supermarket with most produce. We're about 90km from East London, a larger city with an airport.
