    Description

Hi! We are a married couple with two energetic and fun children aged 3 and 8, as well as several rescued dogs and cats. Tom, originally from England, is a Marine Biologist, and Tamsin, originally from Germany, spends most of her time looking after our children and animals. We live in a beautiful rural area in North Wales surrounded by fields, sheep, hills, and 5 minutes walk to the sea. There are spectacular views and good hiking trails from our house, as well as in nearby Snowdonia National Park. We live in a detached house outside of a small Welsh village, where there is a small shop, and a bus to bigger towns / train stations nearby. We have a fenced meadow and a few outbuildings.

We are big animal lovers and have several dogs and cats, including our own pets, as well as rescued dogs and cats who are either being prepared for adoption or staying in our foster care long-term. Several have long-term health issues. Our dogs and cats are all very much loved and we aim to provide them with as much love and care as possible. The dogs are all very friendly and playful and love people, and the cats are mostly calm and affectionate.

During the summer holidays this year (July and August), but also during other times of the year when we are away, we are urgently looking for real pet lovers to look after our dogs and cats for a few weeks whilst we are away. We would be looking for a motivated individual, or ideally a couple / two friends who could look after our animals and house when we go away on holiday with our kids this summer, and/or when we go away at other times of the year. There would be an introductory period at our house to show you what to do before we leave. You would need to be very pet-loving (ideally with experience of looking after dogs and cats), and ideally be enthusiastic, energetic, caring, reliable, friendly, and positive.

Please read our full profile carefully before applying. Although we are a very tolerant and welcoming family, for the safety of our small children and animals we cannot accept drug users, heavy drinkers, and we prefer non-smokers. For the same reasons we also cannot accept any volunteers with serious mental health issues that could affect the safety of our children or animals. Thanks so much for understanding! :-)

You will gain a lot of experience with dog and cat care in a rural Welsh area in North Wales. You will learn about Welsh culture, history, and language and about life in the Welsh countryside. You would be able to explore the beautiful Welsh mountains, coast, woods, and lakes, and you would be able to learn about English and German culture too.

  • Help

    Help

Workawayers will spend time looking after our dogs and cats, which involves:

    - At around 8-9am feed the dogs and cats, exercise the dogs outside, clean their living accommodation (this includes cleaning the cat litter trays, picking up dog poo when the dogs go out, sweeping / mopping the floors, cleaning the kennels etc)
    - Playing with the dogs on our meadow in the afternoon, brushing them, and generally giving them love and affection
    - Spending time with the cats playing, cuddling, and brushing them in the afternoon
    - Keeping an eye on the pets' health and administering any medication
    - Taking the dogs out again in the evening before bedtime
    - Staying in touch with us daily to update us when we are away

You will be doing 25 hours a week (usually 5 hours a day, 5 days a week) in exchange for accommodation and 3 meals a day. You will have 2 days a week free.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You would be staying in your own small bedroom in our house with WIFI, and there is a bathroom, living room, dining room, and kitchen for you to use. You will be looking after the house and animals on your own when we are on holiday.

We provide 3 meals a day and supply all the ingredients.

We usually provide toast, eggs, cereal, yoghurt, or fruit for breakfast, and sandwiches for lunch. For dinner we provide ingredients to prepare a cooked dinner with vegetables, potatoes, rice, pasta, or meat. We can also provide vegetarian meals.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Please note that, as explained, the working hours with the dogs and cats are spread out throughout the day (about 2 hours work in the morning, then 2 hours in the afternoon, and 1 hour in the evening). So you will be working around 5 hours a day, for 5 days a week, so 25 hours in total per week in exchange for accommodation and 3 meals a day. You will have 2 days a week off to explore our beautiful area and to rest and relax.

You will need to be prepared to spend time outside with the dogs in all kinds of Welsh weather (sun, wind, rain, sometimes all in one day!). Beside feeding and exercising the dogs and spending time with the cats, you will need to be happy to clean up all pet areas, dog poo, and cat litter trays.

You will spend some time every day on your own with the pets, and would need to be willing to look after our animals and house when we are away on holiday.

We prefer for Workawayers to stay at least a few weeks, but may consider shorter stays as an exception.
