AUTUMN UPDATE: It is time to put many areas of the farm to bed after a long growing season. Come see our new permaculture areas and help us prepare for spring! Winter is a wonderful time to relax and renew in the little cabin. We offer 2 hour work days and good company in the winter months. You will be running machines to cut grass in the orchard and help with child-minding and weeding in our garden beds.
Andrew & Mareena are trying to grow their own food while also working and raising two busy little boys!
Our eldest is gregarious and high energy, so he loves guests!
On our farm, we have a one-acre apple orchard, two greenhouses that need some serious love and a small herd of cattle. This year we hope to build and plant many new greenhouse beds, raise some chickens, some lambs, and some pigs. Ours is a humble farm and we would love any help you could give!
This year we are focusing on construction projects, refreshing our garden spaces, raising new livestock, and beautifying certain parts of the property.
Our workawayers are invited to stay in a tiny home. It is a work in progress and a labour of love. Currently the woofer space has a tiny wood house with a bed and shelves, an outdoor kitchen, an outhouse, and running water. Our workers may also sleep in their own tents, and we can provide linens, towels, etc. as well as all cooking utensils and a propane stove. We provide access to sunny outdoor showers anytime and the nearby recreation centre has coin-operated hot water showers. We also provide access to free WiFi.
We invite workawayers to set their own work schedule and choose one of two options:
1) Work 2 hours per day stayed. We provide breakfasts and good company!
2) Work 4 hours per day stayed. We provide hot lunches on work days in addition to the above.
We love to host workawayers for meals and enjoy meeting new people from different cultures. We'll often invite you for a home cooked dinner and invite you to cook your favourite dish too :)
Mareena speaks English, French, and some Spanish and is always hoping to immerse the children in foreign languages.
Please send us a message to let us know about yourself and what attracts you to our farm. If you have a special interest in permaculture, livestock experience, or any arborist training, please let us know!

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Saturna Island is a great community and our workawayers always find a way to get involved and meet people here. Many have stayed for a long time and have made lifetime friends. We've even had workawayers come back to stay on other farms on Saturna.
If you are looking for a "small town" experience with very friendly and welcoming people, this is the right place for you. If you have a work visa, there are also lots of opportunities to pick up paid work on the island, especially during the summer months.
If you have the right volunteering spirit, our community will welcome you with open arms. There are many community events that you can help at to get to know people and we encourage all of our workawayers to get as involved in the community as they possibly can.
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Areas we need help with are:
1. Gardening: this includes construction, turning over beds, adding manure, planting, and weeding.
2. Orchard work: summer pruning, and harvest and pressing starting August through to November,
3. Farming: weekly chores include mucking, topping up feed, cleaning enclosures, and general maintenance.
5. General maintenance: fencing, barn and greenhouse repair, lawn maintenance.
6. Language practice: Andrew speaks English only and is learning French. Mareena is fluent in English and French, and would love to practice Spanish with native speakers. We hope for the children to speak both French and English.
8. Childcare: art time, outdoor activities, and engaged play.
We have a off grid tiny home to be used as your private retreat. It is equipped with an outdoor kitchen and outhouse, and could accommodate two if you are travelling as a couple. Propane Stove and all kitchen amenities are provided.
You will stay on the farm itself (we live right across the street) and be afforded as much privacy for your personal time as possible. Our farm and property are steps from the Saturna General Store, the Cafe and the Recreation Centre. We are also a short walk to the Lighthouse Pub and ferry terminal.
We provide basic humble food stuffs for you to cook in your kitchen. We will also provide you a home-cooked lunch on work days if you choose the 4 hours per day option. There are two restaurants on the island, and the General Store is a 5 minute walk if you would like more variety.
Work schedules are flexible, and we'll mostly let you set your own schedule, unless there is a major project going on that day. We need general help in all the areas mentioned above, but we will also provide ample time for you to explore the local area.
What else ...
Saturna Island is located in the Southern Gulf Islands in British Columbia. The island is nearly 50% parkland, and offers countless opportunities for hiking, kayaking, biking, fishing and more. It is also a short ferry ride away from the city of Victoria, our province's capital, and Vancouver, our province's largest city. Please have a look at the Saturna Tourism website to get an idea of what Saturna has to offer.
Our community is small -only 300 people- and very close. If you come from the city, you will discover a whole new way of living here, with events and activities organized throughout the year to bring people together and build a sense of community. For our Lamb Barbeque celebration, Saturna plays host to almost 2000 people from around BC and the United States, on the biggest day of the year, July 1, which is our Canadian National holiday. If you want to get involved and meet people, there are countless ways to volunteer and help out in our community with this and other activities.
We would love to have you stay with us and help us and our growing family to turn this farm into our dream. You will discover an amazing place, amazing people and make memories for a lifetime!
