Description
This project is based in central New Jersey. We run a thriving music and theater Arts school with my family and some really great young arts educators. We help children in our community develop confidence by running acting and music programs throughout the year, and in the summer, we produce four fully-staged youth musical theater plays.
Through our nonprofits, we support artistic activities to raise awareness for youth suicide prevention efforts and create mental health programming for the community.
As you can see, we are quite busy doing great work. It’s quite a whirlwind! We need lots of help with our non-profits. We value volunteers who are excited by these learning opportunities and are willing to roll up their sleeves and help! I am the mother of grownups and we love to meet people from other cultures, build lasting relationships, and help mentor and share experiences that make life better. We live in New Jersey (during the week) and occasionally visit Brooklyn, NY (on weekends.)
We are looking for enthusiastic, kind and, hardworking travelers who will share their culture, cuisine and, spirit to help out our efforts along this journey.
The type of help we are looking for changes month to month, so it is always better for you to let us know how you can help us and we can discuss further if our project is a good fit for you. Please include this information in your initial inquiry to ensure a response.
We are looking for caring individuals with a variety of skills and interests in the following areas:
ORGANIZING, COOKING, CLEANING, YARD HELP, AND OTHER PROJECTS AT HOME AND SCHOOL LOCATION
THEATER SET BUILDING
The Set Building Engineer is responsible for bringing the director’s creative vision to life on stage. This role requires transforming conceptual designs into functional, safe, and visually engaging sets using basic tools, materials, and available resources. The Set Building Engineer must be skilled at problem-solving, flexible, and able to adapt designs to fit the space and requires solid construction skills, creativity, patience, and a passion for helping children and communities experience theater at its best.
VIDEO PRODUCTION
Creative and digital technology skills are needed in film and video editing for our projects. We use Final Cut Pro and can also work with Premiere.
NOTE 1: You should be very energetic, smart, cheerful, self-motivated, resourceful, and creative. You must be able to work independently as well as be a team player. Rest and downtime are respected. A generous spirit AND a sense of humor is a MUST!
NOTE 2: Personal hygiene and personal tidiness is a must. Deodorant is a must.
NOTE 3: Volunteers MUST understand that the project is in suburban central New Jersey and must be committed to our objectives during the exchange. If your primary objective is to be in NYC, this project is not a match.
Note 4; We prefer to receive volunteers who have their own laptop and can stay a minimum of 1 month or more.
NOTE 5: We prefer to receive volunteers who know how to cook and enjoy it, and are willing to clean, organize, do minor construction projects and are energized about hands-on projects.
NOTE 6: We prefer to receive volunteers who enjoy working with children and have knowledge of the craft of acting, set-building, videography, graphic design, and/or music OR have experience with organizing, cleaning, yard work, gardening, building, cooking, and personal assistance.

I stayed with Donnetta and Yuri for a little over two months, and arrived right before Thanksgiving. Where to even start? I’ve been hesitant to start writing this “review” because I possibly couldn’t see how it was possible to sum up a two months experience within a paragraph.
