Description
We need you! There is currently no flood or storm anymore – everything is back to normal. Unfortunately, many volunteers cancelled their plans because of the recent floods, and as a result we are now without volunteer support.
We have a dedicated local team and currently employ four full-time staff members: Methu provides medical care for the dogs, organizes street feeding, manages shopping, and takes care of all matters that arise in the shelter’s daily operations. Issac is responsible for dogs with disabilities. He walks them daily and ensures their regular care, including bathing. Vishen focuses on the dogs’ exercise and overall well-being. His duties include daily walks and providing fresh drinking water. Yathu prepares food for the dogs, maintains cleanliness at the shelter, and supports the team wherever help is needed. All team members work together on feeding the dogs and ensuring their overall care.
Our big shelter is home to more than 130 dogs. In addition to daily shelter work, we run: a spaying and neutering program, a street dog feeding program, a sponsorship program for poor families and for children with disabilities.
Volunteer tasks at the big shelter include: Walking dogs, Spending time with puppies and disabled dogs, Showering dogs, Taking photos and videos - Creating engaging content, such as short clips of our work and sharing them, is a huge support for us.
Volunteers stay in a volunteer house (off-site/10 minutes by scooter) where also dogs live who are preparing to fly to their forever homes. Part of the daily tasks includes: Feeding these dogs twice a day and walking them regularly.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to have a scooter driving license and be willing to rent a scooter or share one with other volunteers.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
There are many things you can learn from the animals and with the animals. They teach patience, empathy, responsibility, and how to communicate beyond words. Living and working closely with them encourages flexibility, self-confidence, and mindfulness, as no day is ever exactly the same.
Staying with us is also a cultural exchange. Workawayers are part of our daily life and our team, not just helpers. We interact openly, support each other, and share routines, and experiences, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and included.
In addition, you will meet volunteers from different countries and backgrounds. Through living and working together, you naturally learn from each other’s perspectives, skills, habits, and stories — things I as a host cannot influence or teach directly, but which make the experience especially valuable and enriching.
The aim is that you leave with new insights, meaningful connections, and a deeper understanding of different cultures, ways of thinking, and yourself.

This host is a registered charity in their country and is looking for volunteers to help with their project(s).

Accommodation
The volunteer house is located about 10 minutes by scooter from the big shelter. 4–8 dogs live at the volunteer house. There is a shared kitchen, a shared bathroom, two double room (possible to also sleep 3 persons), and one living room (here one person also can sleep). Volunteers are responsible for keeping the house clean themselves. Please note: this is a local house, not a hotel.
