    Description

    Hello, Buongiorno, Grüezi and Hallo!

We are Katharina (37) and Sven (45) - originally from Germany, we have lived in Switzerland for 10 years and recently moved to the beautiful area of Acqui Terme in Piemonte, northern Italy. We bought part of an old farmhouse and are in the middle of renovating it to live here permanently. Right now the water is coming from a well and heating is by wood-fired ovens, but we have gas for cooking and electricity as well - it is like traveling back in time.

After one year of traveling around the world with our backpacks, hitchhiking, couchsurfing and seeing how other people in different places live their lives and what makes them happy, we decided to give up our apartment at the beautiful lake of Zurich and quit our former office jobs to fulfill our dreams: Finding a place with more space and nature around to breathe and grow, a house that needs lots of love renovating it and learning how to do that, a garden to put our hands in (and get them dirty), adopting animals to take care of and bringing even more joy into our lives...

Our aim is to change to a more sustainable lifestyle: producing electricity by Photovoltaik and warm water by solar thermal, collecting rain water and filter it, grow our own veggies, fruits and maybe hazelnuts (we have a big garden that we started to cultivate and a second field that our neighbor is growing grains), take wood from our small forest area, create a chicken coop and many other small projects in and around the house and garden. Our dream is to set up a food forest and adopt animals that need our help.

Sven is a mechanical engineer and loves solving problems, repairing machines and tools and working with his hands. Kat is a cultural manager and loves gardening, baking bread or cakes and giving massages.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

As we traveled a lot and experienced Workaway as volunteers, we would love to share our stories with you and hear about your own story and culture. We aim at a respectful lifestyle towards every person and nature. Let's enjoy life together!
We are happy to cook together and share our healthy food - most of our vegetables come from our garden.
As we are new to the area, we would love you to come along and explore the surrounding nature, villages nearby or a trip to another city around or even to the sea with us. We already made good friends with our neighbors - an Italian farmer family with vineyards and hazelnuts around. And the Expat community here is amazing as well! It is never getting boring here and there are always new people to meet and help each other.

  • Help

    Help

Tasks may be harvesting vegetables (or maybe also berries or figs), seeding depending on the season, planting (fruit trees this autumn), mulching, taking care of the compost, watering, planning, creating a small chicken coop and much more - depending on your skills and motivation. We are open for your ideas and happy to teach you what we know, however many things might also be new to us - so let's learn together!

We speak some Italian already, but definitely need some more practice (Sven is a beginner while Kat is intermediate). We are always happy to practice our good English or teach you some German.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will have your own bedroom with a single bed and a shared bathroom. All other rooms in the house we also share like kitchen, living room, terrace, etc.
We love to cook and bake our own bread and are happy to do all of this together, but cookings skills are not a must ;-) Now and then we also go out for a pizza. We are not vegetarian, but don't consume a lot of meat.
It is not super remote here, but you will need a car or bike to move around. We have two old E-bikes and are always happy to pick you up somewhere by car or drop you off.
