  • Description

    Description

We're open to welcoming our home and our hearts to enthusiastic, positive, hard-working individuals. An immediate start is possible.

We are a married couple with 3 grown-up sons, who gave up our day jobs 3 years ago to set up a micro-brewery and are now planning to set up a distillery to produce our craft gin from home. We keep 2 pigs, and a dog (in the house). Alison is 57 and is a chartered surveyor/project manager with a keen interest in protecting the environment, Mark is 56, and used to work in IT for HP before leaving to set up our micro-brewery. We have a Christian faith which we would ask you to respect but are not dogmatic. In the little spare time we have we both play tennis and enjoy music. We have a piano and a number of books for you to read. We live in a lovely rural setting, with a loch at the bottom of the garden and access to a Canadian canoe for the intrepid (times spent on the loch are limited to when the sailing club is not using it). We are only 7 miles from Glasgow city centre!

We are just starting as hosts.

We offer a great location, accommodation with 3 hearty meals each day (bring your own snacks, these are not included). We live in a 4 bedroomed 300 year old Millers cottage which has a barn attached and can accommodate up to 4 volunteers, although we will normally just need one or two at a time. (2 small upstairs bedrooms, each with a double bed and one shared upstairs bathroom). There is also a shower room on the ground floor which can be shared. The accommodation is in the roof of our cottage and so the height is restricted (ceiling height 1.75m and 1.90m respectively) although the downstairs ceilings are more 'normal'. Please be aware of this if you are over 6 feet in height.

In return we require you to be hands-on, practical with common sense and a genuine love of the country. We need people who enjoy volunteering outdoors doing a variety of jobs including looking after animals and who put in the hours....coming back indoors after just two hours isn't a good exchange for us and may lead to us asking you to find another host!

    Non-smokers only please.

There is a lot to experience, in an amazing location, great accommodation & good food each day. We are located 2 miles from the nearest town, Milngavie and have bicycles which you can use. There is a (pricey) store closer than that but still a good 15 minutes walk away.

Volunteers will learn about how we run our small businesses as well as what it is like to live on a small-holding where we try to live off the land as much as possible. You will also learn about animal care (pigs and dogs). You will get lots of physical and varied jobs to do and things to build or repair as well as gardening. In order to learn how to do all of the tasks a good grasp of English is required.

There is a lot of time to relax, read, study, go for walks/ runs/ climb hills, cycling, do a hobby or play music, skype friends or catch the train in to Glasgow.

Very tasty Scottish/European/Indian cooking, served up along with conversation on just about every topic. We're pretty interesting people, lived in London, Munich and other locations before making Scotland our home. We have a lot of life and business experience that our visitors could benefit from....we don't lecture but are happy for you to "pick our brains" we can open your eyes and minds to ideas and opportunities you may not have considered or thought you were capable of achieving (it may just change the path your life is on :-D )....if you're the quiet, shy type who likes to spend their time off alone in their room that's ok too!

We have English accents and our English grammar is good so we're happy to help you improve your English.

You'll be based in the heart of Scotland with the ability to go out and discover all sorts of things. we would rather have volunteers who got out and saw the world rather than spend hours a day in their room with the curtains closed sleeping or on the internet but that is your choice!

    Help

We really need volunteers who are practical and happy to do physical tasks, gardening, ground clearing, DIY, repairs, building and can "hit the ground running". We have to say that this is physical work and some strength is needed, read on if still interested!

We are starting our own journey with hosting and no doubt will learn from each other. It's really important you fully read all the information before deciding if this is the place for you.

We have about an acre of land which includes a wooded area, pathways and grass and a jetty at the bottom of the garden. We also have neighbours living in our barn adjacent to our cottage and so we need to be respectful of their privacy and quiet.

Just now, our priority is to start clearing a space for an outbuilding which we are constructing on site as well as getting on with it's construction; we have a polytunnel and fruit and veg garden and your work will include protecting fruit trees from the birds and gathering ripe fruit, growing vegetables, clearing weeds from paths, weeding beds, chopping wood, clearing and moving items into new places. There will also be some DIY around the house.

Be aware the help we require can be physical and a bit monotonous. You'll have a warm, relaxed welcome from us. You're expected to help for 5 hours a day (we envisage having help from 8.30-12.30ish then the last hour later in the day, but we are flexible and will work with your schedule).

You can get two full days off each week. This could vary if you prefer a different arrangement, if we can accommodate it and still get the work done.
We need help with outdoor tasks on our very small smallholding. Some of the tasks we need help with are:

Building new sheds and animal housing. Chopping and bringing in firewood.

Help needed with clearing materials left over around the house - lifting and carrying metal sheeting and piping, fence posts, roof slates, sorting general scrap and rubbish, burning other stuff. Turning over the composting materials. Burning rubbish.

We need help building frames and fencing with the fruit bushes to protect the fruit from birds and to weed and plant in the large veg garden/poly tunnel and sort and clean gardening tools.

    Help repairing our 4 x 10m polytunnel

Moving and rebuilding the pig pen.

Anyone with good DIY skills could tackle some filling/ sanding/ painting of walls and varnishing some doors on our cottage.

    5 hours a day, 5 days a week.

We live in Scotland - the help we need is mostly outdoors and you will often be working alone, it can be a bit monotonous and in all weathers (Scotland = a lot of rain) and often in muddy conditions.....I can't emphasise that enough!!! We'll lend you waterproofs and wellingtons, but please be sure you think you will embrace the lifestyle and the responsibilities we give you rather than try to endure it.

We don't need childcare help (our children are adults) or IT help or language help. If horizontal rain and knee-deep mud, getting up at 7.30am are not for you and you prefer to stay in bed, then you should probably apply somewhere else....I don't ask you to do anything I don't or can't do myself and it's really nothing a hot shower or bath afterwards can't fix! Of course we do sometimes get good weather but it's rare and pretty brief so I feel it's only fair I paint the worst-case scenario for you.

    Accommodation

Two comfortable guest rooms available each with a double bed and shared bathroom - both rooms have fantastic views of farmland. Good home-made food - 3 meals a day plus all the drinks you need (snacks between meals are not included so bring your own if you like to munch all day). Free access to the kitchen for drinks and the washing machine. Both bedrooms are suitable for two people sharing. All meals are included. Non-smokers only please!

Dirty clothes should not be worn in the house and if you make any mess then PLEASE clean it up (without being asked).

We ask you to give us back our rooms in the same immaculate way you find them.

We enjoy a peaceful quiet life here, it may be too quiet for some. You could see this as a great opportunity for a bit of a luxury retreat....although "civilisation" (Glasgow City Centre) is only 7 miles away :-) There's unreliable and slow wi-fi, a TV in our living room and kitche and if you need anything else we're happy to get it for you within reason.

    What else ...

As we're only 2 miles from Milngavie train station and 7 miles from Glasgow city centre, you can get trains and buses all over Scotland! We're in a really popular location for cyclists and walkers and are only 2 miles from the start of the famous West Highland Way.

There is a lot of time to relax, read, study, go for walks/ runs/ climb hills, cycling, do a hobby or play music, skype friends or catch the train in to Glasgow.

We have English accents and our English grammar is good so we're happy to help you improve your English.

We won't be booking volunteers a long time in advance as your (or our) plans may change so it's best to get in touch with us just a few WEEKS before you'd like to volunteer. Thanks.
