    Description

Hello! I’m an Ojibwa / Cree / Swedish First Nations mama living with my children on Gabriola Island, where we are settling into a new home and slowly establishing garden spaces while learning the rhythms of the land together.

I’m inviting 1–2 Workawayers to join us for a cultural exchange experience and to share in simple daily island life. Hosting visitors over time has been very meaningful for our family — we’ve grown through sharing meals, stories, languages, and different ways of living, and we truly value the connection that comes from welcoming people from around the world into our home.

Activities here are light and seasonal, and happen alongside me as we organize home and outdoor spaces together. These may include:
    • helping set up small garden beds
    • light seasonal orchard care as we learn together
    • simple shared household tasks
    • organizing tools or outdoor spaces
    • walking our friendly dog Aries 🐕

As someone with Ojibwa, Cree, and Swedish roots, I value sharing perspectives about relationship to land, culture, and community care, and I also enjoy learning about visitors’ traditions, foods, and experiences in return.

Gabriola Island is part of the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation and has long been known as a place where people come to slow down, before collenization tribes would come or send people that need a internal perpective, and still today the reconnecting with the land, and find space for reflection and healing. It is not quite city and not fully rural — it carries a quieter rhythm that many people experience as supportive for rest, clarity, and personal growth, and a place where people slow down enough they begin to notice and gently work with the “war inside” in their own way. Is funny the things our bodys and unconscious tell us when we are not being over stimulated all the time by the worlds loudness for attention.

This stay is a good fit for people who enjoy nature, slower-paced environments, and meaningful connection.

If this sounds like a good match, I’d love to hear from you

Dog walking is one of the biggest things that will be needed, one walk from each workaway hosted, if we are not doing a bigger tasks in a day. I am looking for 1 to 2 hours a day of exercise for the dog, if you love exploring beaches and different wooded paths. Aries is a perfect companion.

The island is a beautiful tourist destination and lots of outdoor walking paths and beaches to visit. I can help facilitate rides unless my schedule is not work able to do so there is a bus system on the island that can get you to most of the placese you need to go. There is a golf course, out door hockey rink(not on ice), tennis courts, skate park, three restaurants and if shopping is needed we are a 20 minute ferry ride to Nanaimo where there are also a bus system and many malls and shopping facilities.
