    Description

We’re a young Czech family living in McBride, BC, which is a lovely small town situated in between the Cariboo and Rocky Mountains. Our family includes Matt, who works as a paramedic, Veronika, who is currently on maternity leave, and our six-month-old baby.

A few years ago, we traveled across Canada through Workaway and had an amazing time meeting new people. We enjoyed the experience so much that we’ve now decided to become hosts ourselves and continue this journey from the other side.

We don’t expect travellers to work too much — we understand you're here primarily to explore and travel! That said, in exchange for accommodation and meals, we do ask for a fair amount of help in return.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Travellers will experience life in a quiet mountain town surrounded by beautiful nature. We're located right between the Rockies and the Cariboo Mountains, with stunning peaks in every direction you look. You’ll learn about rural living in Canada, help with outdoor or indoor projects, and enjoy a slower, more grounded lifestyle. There's also the chance to exchange cultural traditions and maybe even pick up a few Czech words or recipes along the way! And if you're up for a fun challenge, you can always try to convince Matt that Czech beer isn’t the best in the world — good luck with that! 😄

  • Help

    Help

We recently bought an older house and are in the process of renovating it.

This year, our main focus will be on clearing out junk from the yard, preparing firewood, moving things around, landscaping (mowing the lawn, weed whacking). We also have a few small, manageable outdoor projects that you’re welcome to take on.

If you'd rather help inside, we could use help with everyday chores such as doing the dishes, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, laundry...or deep cleaning (like windows or bathrooms). If you enjoy being around babies, you're welcome to spend some time with our little one — he's a bit shy, so there's no expectation for you to be alone with him. And if you like cooking, we’d be happy if you cooked from time to time, we enjoy trying out new meals and cuisines.

There’s always something to do, but we never want anyone to feel pressured. What you help with really depends on what you’re comfortable doing.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You’ll have your own private camper on our property with a full bathroom and a kitchenette. Washing machine and dryer are in the house.
We can share dinners and breakfasts or keep them separate, depending on what feels right for everyone. We usually don't have lunch but you're welcome to prepare one for yourself.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Since we’re currently busy with our baby, we won’t be able to take you on many trips ourselves. That’s why we think a couple, a pair of friends or possibly an individual who doesn't mind travelling alone with their own vehicle would be the best fit. You can explore nearby forest roads with our forestry truck or our older quad bikes. There's even a canoe and paddleboard you’re welcome to use.

Please keep in mind that McBride is a small rural town, and having a vehicle is essential to fully enjoy the beautiful surroundings. There's plenty of hikes, bike trails (we don't have downhill bikes though), splendid waterfalls, Fraser river, Lasalle Lake (30 mins) or Kinbasket Lake (1 hour). We're about 45 minutes from the mighty Mt. Robson and around 1 hour and 45 minutes from Jasper. Clearwater and Wells Gray Park are around 3,5 hours away. Prince George is about 2 hours drive.
