Darren and Kathy were excellent hosts who made us feel at home from day one. They were our seventh Workaway hosts in Canada and we were blown away by their kindness and generosity. We felt like they shared similar values with us and so we found it really easy to get along with them. In the five weeks we stayed, we enjoyed lots of fun memories… read more together and hope that we get the chance to return one day.
We were really impressed with Darren and Kathy’s approach to organising the work: they had written the tasks they wanted help with on post-it notes so we could easily see what needed doing. There were a variety of inside and outside jobs, like wood staining, pressure washing, leaf blowing, paint touch-ups, and sewing. They trusted us to manage our time and do the work as we saw fit, which made us feel valued and motivated to do a good job.
Much to our delight, Darren and Kathy enjoyed eating healthy and delicious meals. We really enjoyed sharing a meal schedule with them, where we would take turns making either lunch or dinner for everyone. They kindly adapted to our vegetarian diet and made fantastic foods like home-made pizza and pasta, chickpea brownies and cookies, ramen and babaganoush. We liked sharing our passion for good food and eating meals together with good conversation or watching a TV series. They were also respectful of letting us have time on our own if we just wanted to do our own thing.
In our downtime, we were able to use Darren’s kayaks and explore the large lake accessible from their property, which was really fun to do on warmer days. We went on a few hikes together during our stay, and Darren gave us a tour of Parry Sound and all its amazing places. Darren also has several gaming consoles and lots of games, which he was more than happy to let us play. On top of this, the house is large and there was heaps of room for us to relax by the wood fireplace or chill out in our own comfortable bedroom.
Overall, we had a great experience with Darren and Kathy, and were so pleased we were able to stay with them. Highly recommended!
