*** Currently our business is closed due to COVID-19, and paid work is not available ***

We are a family of four who own a guesthouse on the beautiful wild West Coast of New Zealand. We are located an hour south of Hokitika, and 30 minutes north of Franz Josef Glacier. If you love nature, hiking, fishing, hunting, exploring.. you’ll love it here!

Because of COVID-19, the business is now mainly hibernating. But as it is a large building on large grounds, we are still welcoming the occasional unpaid volunteer or two to help us out with different projects. The work may involve: gardening, firewood, painting, fencing, cleaning, organising...

We’ve hosted so many people now and it’s such a pleasure meeting individuals from different countries and walks of life. We ask for 3-4 hours work per day, five days per week, as well as participating in normal household/family tasks like help in the kitchen and light housework. We try to time your days off for fine weather.

We live 10 minutes from the nearest town, so you will need your own car to make the most of the area.

If you want to experience life with a very relaxed rural kiwi family, we fit that bill! We’d like to take you hunting or fishing if time or weather allows. We love meeting new people and exchanging stories and life experiences. Also, if you’ve been on the road, here is a peaceful place to stay, recharge, enjoy a hot shower and do your laundry.

  • Help

Paid work at the lodge (Pre-COVID) involves making beds, cleaning, bathrooms, vacuuming, dishwashing and tidying up behind the cook, and assisting our children to get on the school bus in the mornings. There is no experience needed, but you need to have a willingness to learn, be efficient and have an eye for detail.

We have a reliable internet connection with reasonable speed - it does drop out from time to time but resumes within a few minutes. It’s good enough to stream movies for example... if the youngest child isn’t downloading a Fortnite update...
