We are a sister and a brother who have inherited a common property in the countryside, located in the heart of a National Nature park in Latvia, Tērvete. It is a magical place surrounded with a biological diversity, nature values and wonderful views. Our family owns it for over a 100 years now!
We want to develop this place (woods, meadows) by implementing nature friendly ideas and activities. The main goal is to preserve and improve the existing nature values: like restoring biologial diversity in the meadows and groving healthy forests, while also doing some kind of nature friendly economic activities: using permaculture methods, using solar energy etc.
We have started to seriously work on the property just recently, but so far we have partly cleared the forest from the bushes, learned a lot about the meadows and biology, built one small eco-friendly house, started a beekeeping. We have spent the whole last Summer in the tent in the property, and it has been just great!
It has a lot of benefits: peaceful, quiet, beautiful place; fresh air (the wood has a lot of pine-trees which are especially good for breathing!); romantic atmosphere while cooking food on an open fire-place, also sleeping in a tent (but eventually there will be also wooden houses...).
We can provide workawayers with a really wide range of possibilities: from carpentry, crafts and building to beekeeping, forestry, gardening, using ideas of permaculture! We are really excited to host anyone who wants to help us make something really valuable in the middle of a National Nature park!
Help with Eco Projects
DIY and building projects
Creating/ Cooking family meals
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
This project can help with improving the skills and the knowledge about the nature, biology, forestry, carpentry, crafts, beekeeping, permaculture, Latvian mentality. It gives workawayer a chance to be with nature and to get closer to it. It can teach a person to live in a simple conditions with no stress and to just accept the things as they are, and hopefully get joy out of the common working process.
We expect different kinds of help, depending on workawayers interests and our most urgent needs.
The planned tasks:
- Forestry (clearing bushes, tree sawing, planting new trees etc.)
- Working on meadows biological diversity to restore different plants;
- Carpentry and wooden house building; (Also making bird cages:))
- Cooking common meals;
- Using nature materials for evolving the landscape (like using unnecesary bushes to make attractive and useful things, for example- canopies);
- using permaculture principles in gardening (starting a small garden.)
!NB We highly recommend to get a tick-borne encephalitis vaccine before coming on a workaway in our property.
Latvian (Lettish): Fluent
The accomodation is more open-air like: for now we can host workawayers in tents, but in the little house there are showers, WC, electricity and water access: everything for the basic needs.
If there are just a couple of workawayers, time to time it might be possible to sleep in the little wooden house.
It is even possible that with a help of workawayers we build a wooden summer house, which can be used by workawayers when ready.
The cooking will take place outside or in the little house when necessary.
We would divide cooking days/meals flexibly, depending on what tasks the workawayer chooses to do. For now we think that meals will be held together. Also there is a chance if there are many workawayers, one can choose cooking as a workaway task.
We provide with the main products, which are available in the local shops.
The property is located in the National Nature park. The biggest part of it is owned by the State, and in this public area of the States' property there are nice nature trails supplemented by different attractions for kids and for adults: the most popular is Fairytale forest, full with wooden fairy tale characters. Also there are possiblities of active leisure (like climbing trees etc.)
This activity park is just 10 minutes walk away from our property, and there is a small river along the boarder. So we can fully enjoy the quietness even though the one of the most popular tourist objects is so close to us. The activity park also values the fact that it is located in National park, so the nature is being preserved there as well.
Just within a 5-10 minutes away by car there is a horse farm, and it is possible to get involved there in your free time.
The closest biggest town Jelgava is about 30km away (2,00 eur by bus.). Normally in the Summer season there are a lot of cultural activities. The town also has a lot of historical values (like biggest palace in the Baltic states etc.)
From Jelgava it is easy to reach the capital City Riga - it is about 45 km away (45 minutes by train, which costs just about 2,00 Eur one way.) The local transport in general is cheap.

We have limited energy sources (as the electricity is provided with solar energy only). But there is water access, showers, WC.
