    Description

    Hello,

I'm Robert, a versatile and kind individual from Arnhem, Netherlands, born in 1992. I have a strong appreciation for puns and am always eager to help others. My experiences traveling to various parts of the world have made me well-versed in different cultures. If you're interested in getting to know me better, a Skype video call is a great option.

With my Chinese wife Angel, we live a happy but busy life, open to hosting work-awayers. Our 65m2 corner house offers a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable stay for Workaway guests, including:

    - A 5m2 handbuild private guestroom with a comfortable bed & electricity.
    - A 3m2 handbuild private guestroom under the stairs with a comfortable bed & electricity. Kinda Harry Potter feeling but better!
    - A 15m2 living room with a comfortable sleep sofa and a high-quality air filter system.
    - A 10m2 dining room with a large table and work desk, suitable for eating, conversing, and studying.
    - A 10m2 kitchen equipped with a fridge-freezer combo, microwave-oven combo, 5-pit induction plate, dishwasher, and all necessary utensils.
    - A 6m2 optimized bathroom with a sink, medicine cabinet, dedicated shower, and storage for clothes and towels.
    - A 4m2 toilet with a toilet shower, providing automated cleansing with warm water on a heated seat.
    - A 20m2 partially shaded corner garden.

Additional unique features include mesh Wi-Fi, a robot vacuum cleaner and wiper, a washing/drying combo, Google smart home speakers, and an electronic door lock that you can open with your phone for your convenience.

Our house is in a quiet neighborhood in Arnhem, just a 10-minute walk from the city center. Arnhem is known as the fashion capital of the east and offers various parks, forests, activities, and nightlife options for workawayers to explore. The specific attractions available may vary depending on the season.

As we have had multiple host experiences, we can tell the following details would work well:

    - Be communicative. So say what you will do and do what you are saying.
    - Eagerness. This means taking on things to do and/or figuring out how to do them.
    - Be (somewhat) comfortable around other humans, those who need a lot of personal space will struggle with us.
    - Are organized and clean. Meaning they leave the place better than they encounter them.
    - Not be (so) picky. It's a good trait to have in life in general.
    - Stay at least for 2 weeks, preferably for longer. Most workawayers start to feel comfortable after about 1 week.
    - English around B1 level or higher. Being able to hold your own in a conversation makes all the differences and makes personalities shine.

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    The list of what a workawayer can benefit or learn from during the cultural exchange is aplenty, but to give a few examples;

Angel is still learning Dutch for her citizenship test. This means daily Dutch practice. If interested in practicing Dutch (in addition to (self) learning), this is your jam. The same applies for Manderin (Chinese).

If you're more intrigued by cultural aspects, you're in the right place as well. we are fascinated by different cultures, how they function, and how certain mindsets have developed. Having traveled to various places, we have some knowledge about various (major) cultures worldwide. Robert is also open to discussing politics, as he believes it shapes cultures, though not always for the better. He thinks life can be fulfilling, especially in the Netherlands.

Alternatively, various skills with your hands Is also something we can provide. From carpentry, to (correct) use of (power) tools, to gardening, to using AI technologies intending on automating your whole life.

In essence, we are extremely versatile and we strongly believe that exchanging cultures enriches life and broadens one's horizons. There are numerous truths, but some are more compatible than others.

  • Help

    Help

For 4-5 hours per day for 5 days a week (depending on the heaviness of the work), you help us out with whatever we need assistance with. Our priority is full-stack programmers who can build automation software to completely automate our lives. BUT, if you are not a programmer, still feel free to reach out to us if you can help us with the things mentioned below.

Aside from that, here is a list of tasks we need help with:
    - Carpentry, DIY, and in general being decent with using your hands
    - Consolidating our digital and online ecosystem, including managing multiple accounts and platforms. This involves administrative actions.
    - Creating step-by-step instructions for my wife, who is not very tech-savvy.
    - Assisting in decluttering and organizing our digital archives of documents.
    - Helping with various Trello tasks, which involve internet actions.

There are many more tasks to tackle, too numerous to list here.

By default, you are free to roam around 1 day during the weekend, and if you want a (additional) day off, you just have to ask :)! We also expect you to help with basic chores in addition to the 5 hours of assistance per day. For example, if one person cooks, the other does the dishes. These are the types of basic chores we expect you to participate in.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will have your private bedroom*, which offers clean air, low noise levels, and adjustable lighting. The room can be closed off with a door, ensuring you have the desired privacy. There are also nearby electrical outlets for charging your devices.

The kitchen, toilet, bathroom, and dining room are shared spaces and will be accessible to you at all times. Some rooms will be off-limits, but they won't be in your path to the accessible areas. We will point them out to you when you arrive.

We will take care of your food needs, and you are welcome to join us for meals based on our daily diet and schedule. If you have any special dietary requirements or allergies, please let us know so we can see if we can accommodate your needs. Alternatively, you are free to use the kitchen to prepare your meals if you prefer. We understand the importance of food in feeling at ease, so we strive to make that happen for you.

*Both guestrooms offer this, however, guestroom 2 is noticeably smaller and we recommend the traveler to pack lighter than average (1 trekking backpack or 1 suitcase tops).

Arnhem is known as the fashion capital of the east in the Netherlands, although it may not be to everyone's taste. The city offers a rich history, various museums, local swimming spots, and plenty of sightseeing opportunities.

If desired, we can help you plan what to see and do during your visit.

My home offers both a fixed and a mobile desk for you to work from, as well as a noise-canceling Sony WH-1000XM3 headphone for focused work. All rooms can be sealed off by doors to minimize interruptions. Overall, my house is designed to cater to the needs of digital nomads, providing a comfortable and productive environment.

You are technically allowed to park your motorhome in the parking spot in front of my house for up to 3 days before needing to move it. However, I am confident that we can find a solution for longer-term parking if necessary.
