Description
Hi! I’m Óscar from Colombia, and I’m about to start my first round the world trip, and my very first Workaway. I’m genuinely excited to meet good people, learn from different cultures, and improve my English every day.

I’m easygoing, respectful, tidy, and proactive. I’m happy to help with house tasks, cleaning and organizing, gardening, pet care, and general support around the home. I’m the kind of person who shows up on time, asks how can I help, and takes care of your place as if it were my own.

I work remotely as a digital marketer for around 4 hours a day with a flexible schedule, so I can also support with light digital tasks if helpful, like basic social media help, content ideas, or simple website updates.

Left by host (Join me and my partner in our ...) for Workawayer ()

Oscar stayed with us for about three weeks, from around 7 May until 25 May, and it was genuinely a pleasure to host him.

First of all: lovely dude! Oscar is calm, kind-hearted, collaborative, grateful, and very pleasant to have around. He was eager to help out, flexible where possible, and always willing to contribute while also balancing his… read more other obligations. During his stay, we shared both the good moments and the more chaotic ones, which made the experience feel very real and memorable.

We worked together in gardens, and sometimes that was a lot of work! Oscar handled it well and was always willing to help. He also helped with some minor house improvements, and I am very grateful that he was able to fix the sync issue on the DJI drone as well. On top of that, he managed to get the Chromecast screen sharing from my Chromebook to the smartboard working, so everything is now functioning as intended. It was honestly really nice to finally get a few practical things done that had been waiting for attention.

Oscar also got to witness a very Dutch moment when we had a clash with a rude bystander who was almost ready to report his host for no good reason. Unfortunately for Oscar, this meant witnessing two Dutch people yelling at each other, so he involuntarily learned quite a bit of Dutch cursing. Sorry Oscar, hahaha.

His stay was also a good opportunity for him to improve his English. At first, he was worried that his English was not good enough, but honestly, it was perfectly decent. Of course, he may not yet feel fully comfortable speaking English in the same relaxed way as I do, but I saw real growth. If he maintains this level, I think his English will be more than sufficient for 95% of the situations he will encounter in life.

One funny memory was the “onion incident.” Oscar thought he had pulled an onion from the garden, and from the distance where I was standing, it looked like one too. So I enthusiastically said: “Great! Throw it in Scootie and we’ll eat it tonight.” A day or two later, my wife prepared it, and let’s just say we discovered it was definitely not the best idea. Whoops, hahaha. A memorable lesson for all of us.

All in all, Oscar is a good guest and Workawayer to have around. I wish him all the best with his world travels. India in particular is probably going to be a shock and a half, haha, but I hope it will be an amazing experience for him. I am happy to have been his first host, and I sincerely hope I left a fantastic first impression on him as well.

This was my first Workaway experience, and honestly it exceeded my expectations in many ways. Robert and Angel made me feel welcomed from the beginning and truly included me in their daily life and routines in Arnhem.

The experience felt very authentic and real. I had the opportunity to practice my English every day, learn about Dutch culture,… read more spend time with locals, and experience a different lifestyle outside of tourism. Robert is very intelligent, organized, and open to conversations about technology, culture, travel, and life in general, which made the cultural exchange very enriching for me.

One thing I really appreciated is that Robert also shared local experiences with me beyond the volunteering itself. For example, he invited me to visit the Palace of Justice in Arnhem, which was very interesting and gave me the feeling of experiencing the city from a more local perspective instead of only as a tourist.

The location of their home is also excellent. They live in a beautiful and calm area of Arnhem, very close to the city center and also close to the train station, which can easily be reached walking in around five minutes. This made it very easy to explore Arnhem and also travel to other important cities in the Netherlands. One of my favorite things was the incredible park near their house. I saw some of the most beautiful sunsets of my life there.

The work itself was mainly related to gardening, organizing tools, helping around the house, and different practical tasks. I think it is important to mention that the volunteering can be physically demanding, especially on some days with outdoor work, so future volunteers should come prepared for that and with a good attitude toward manual tasks. At the same time, I also felt that communication was possible. When I mentioned I was tired, the following days became much more relaxed and balanced, which I appreciated a lot.

I also really appreciated having a farewell dinner during the last days of my stay. It was a very kind gesture and honestly a very nice surprise for me.

Some days were more intense than others, but overall I never felt ignored or treated badly. I think this experience taught me a lot, not only about volunteering, but also about myself, my limits, and the kind of cultural exchange I enjoy the most.

I’m grateful that my first Workaway experience happened with them, and I would definitely recommend this host to people who are looking for a real cultural exchange experience, are open-minded, adaptable, and comfortable helping with practical and sometimes physical work.

Thank you Robert and Angel for welcoming me into your home and for being part of the beginning of this journey around the world.
