    Description

We have a very small meditation retreat centre cum residence with two female Buddhist monastics and another female practitioner (Raj). I, Dr. Karma am a Buddhist nun and an academic and work at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, which is just a walking distance away from our sanctuary. I am also a meditation teacher and have my own YouTube channel, where I conduct weekly meditation classes.

Dr. Tenzin, also a Buddhist nun is from Bhutan and teaches Tibetan language and loves outdoor adventures and is a very good guide of Semenyih.

We have three dogs and four cats. We have a mini garden and a small therapy pool. We have a garden portion, a fruit orchard with coconut and banana trees and a vegetable plot behind our residence. We observe a vegetarian diet and practice mindfulness in our daily lives.

The female practitioner, Raj is from the Sikh tradition and practices her own spiritual tradition. She runs a small home catering venture called Punjab Heritage and Fusion Delights and is an excellent cook. She specialises in authentic North Indian Cuisine and caters to university students nearby.

We love the hills of Semenyih and the feel of the university town. There is Broga Hill nearby and the Kuan Yin temple at the end of the Broga Road. The Chinese food in Broga and Semenyih town is excellent. There are shops within a walking distance, including restaurants, supermarkets, a pharmacy and even a gym!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You will be exposed to meditation, Buddhism, Sikhism, gardening and cooking and getting to live with people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds under one roof. You will get to learn and practice meditation and enjoy nature in our locality and experience the different festivals we celebrate in Malaysia.

We in turn would love to connect with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds who can teach us any skills that they may possess (if they wish to) and to genuinely be part of our community for as long as they are with us. Our community respects the principles of equality, diversity and inclusivity and we love making new friends.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

An 8000 square feet semi-detached residence in a Balinese style resort home (including a 5000 square feet garden). We offer our guest room with one double bed with attached bathroom and air-conditioning (max 2 hours per day just to cool down the room). When there is high demand and not wishing to turn anyone away for lack of accommodation, we may request you to share room with another Workawayer. Otherwise, we have very comfortable mattresses where one can sleep in the prayer hall of our sanctuary, which is safe, clean and quiet. We try our best to accommodate Workawayers and request your flexibility.

Our meals are vegetarian, either rice or chapati with vegetables and curry/lentils (we cook twice a day, we don't cook for dinner, we cook for lunch and eat the same for dinner). We may not always be able to cook meals but we have plenty of supplies at home (vegetables, rice, etc.) and Workawayers are free to cook for themselves.

Transportation is easy using the Grab app. They can go hiking at Broga Hill, visit the Kuan Yin temple in Broga, the reclining Buddha temple in Semenyih and Putrajaya which are all within 30 minutes' drive from our place.

We are able to accommodate only females as our place is for female practitioners. Please observe mindfulness and try to save electricity, water and be mindful of speech (lower the volume) and sleep by midnight so as not to disturb the other practitioners. Please be kind to our furry friends and remember to make their safety a priority. Please do not bring home anyone without our permission and not to bring meat into our home or kill any living being (ants included!). No alcohol, drugs or cigarettes and any other harmful or banned substances! Also, we request that Workawayers respect the host and the community by being flexible, accommodating, following the schedule and using kind speech. We have limited resources but we offer all that we can...we are sharing our space and would be so happy to welcome anyone who would treat us as family.

    Profile photo of Mittu (Brownie)

    Mittu (Brownie) (6 years)

Mittu, our latest addition to the sanctuary was rescued from a kill shelter and has undergone much trauma and suffering. Being separated from her babies while nursing them and then stuffed into a kill shelter where she lost most of her buddies, she made eye contact with Komala, her rescuer and then saved from cruelty and torture. Together with Deviga, Mittu was brought to us all scared and confused. Now, after 2 months, Mittu is inseparable from Jack and sees him as the centre of her universe. Jackie is the reason why she wants to live. She finally learnt how to bark again after a long silence in the dog pounds and vet. She loves dragging her stomach on the grass for a good scratch and has burrowed a number of holes in the garden. Still afraid of humans, she has managed to come within 1 m away from us...and knows her name. May Mittu learn how to trust good humans...and be wary of those who have no compassion in their hearts.

    Profile photo of Jackie

    Jackie (7 years)

Sweet ol' Jackie, is the hero of the sanctuary, who is adorable and very loving. A gentle giant, he loves everyone and everyone loves him. A champion jumping Jack in the Box, he gets super excited when it is time for walks and all he wants is to see the big and beautiful world out there. Such a beautiful soul.

    Profile photo of Roxy

    Roxy (3 years)

Roxy is very loving and is a very good girl. With the occasional jealous outbursts with Mittu, she is a very obedient girl. She is relatively disciplined and very friendly. All she wants is some pets on the head and hugs, and of course, her twice daily walks.

    Profile photo of Scruffy

    Scruffy (1 year)

Our youngest and noisiest kitty, who is curious about everything and eats anything...doesn't like snuggles but loves a good playmate. With beautiful spots, she is transforming from a Scruffy into a chubby Tabby.

    Profile photo of Princess

    Princess (1 year)

Beautiful girl with heterochromia (one eye blue and the other yellow). Snow white and fur as soft as silk. Doesn't like cuddles but loves to play...always looking for a playmate...She is a loner. Yearning for a companion, her best friend Scruffy found her soulmate in Kiki and Rinzin (Baba) is enjoying old age in solitude. Princess loves her humans and hopes that one day, she will find a kitty playmate.

    Profile photo of Tashi (Kiki)

    Tashi (Kiki) (11 years)

Very loving and loyal kitty, a bit mischievous and scratchy at times..he has his moods, but he loves deeply. Kittu can wipe tears off our cheeks when we are grieving and knows when we are ill and comes to cure us from ailments by sitting beside us. He misses his mothers so much when we travel and is always the first to greet us when we return from travels. He shows so much emotion and genuinely understands our pain. Tortured when he was a child by children who poured soda and glue on him, rescued from the playground. All he wanted was to love the kids and for the kids to love him back. He still sits at home, hoping that some kid will come and play with him. In the meantime, he is the Sleeping Beauty of the house, waiting for the right playmate to drop by.

    Profile photo of Rinzin (Baba)

    Rinzin (Baba) (17 years)

Our oldest and most docile kitty...a gentle soul who couldn't hurt even a fly. A most gracious and regal kitty, gracefully ageing...He loves a good scratch under the face and be warned...he loves to lick salt off our heads. He loves his human grandparents, mothers, uncles and aunts and cousins and his furry and brothers and sisters and during his heyday, used to care for each new stray in the house with grace and compassion, gently assuring that everything will be alright. He is so loved by everyone. The Big Brother of the sanctuary, everyone loves him.
