Description
Join us in Nagyszékely – where nature, art and community come together!
Our volunteer programme is organised by our Association, a Hungarian non-profit organisation. Volunteers join our community through a spirit of cooperation and cultural exchange, taking part in activities that support community building, arts, education and environmental awareness.
We are currently looking for a couple or two friends travelling together who would like to become part of this unique rural community project.
We are a family of professional actors and theatre directors who work in youth talent development, community building and artistic projects. Together with our young daughter, we live in Nagyszékely, Tolna County, Hungary, where we are creating a small animal farm and a creative community space that brings together nature, sustainable farming, art and education.
Our farm is currently home to 6 chickens, 6 rabbits, 4 sheep, 4 mini pigs, 2 cats and 3 dogs. Alongside caring for our animals, we garden, improve the property, enjoy DIY projects and work towards our long-term vision of creating a farm-to-table community farm.
Our dream is to establish a place where food grown in our own garden can one day be served in a small family-style restaurant on the farm. We also plan to organise summer camps, workshops and educational programmes, mainly for children from larger cities, where they can discover small-scale farming, animal care, gardening, environmental awareness and Hungarian culture through hands-on experiences.
Volunteer activities include caring for the animals, gardening, maintaining the property, helping with DIY and improvement projects, and seasonal outdoor tasks. We usually work together 4–5 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Volunteers are accommodated in a separate, freshly painted and fully furnished house and receive daily meals. Depending on the possibilities of our non-profit programme, partial reimbursement of travel expenses or other justified costs may also be available in certain cases.
If you love animals, nature, countryside life and cultural exchange, and would like to become part of a growing community initiative, we would be delighted to welcome you to Nagyszékely, where together we are building a place where nature, sustainability, art and community truly belong together. -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Spending time with us is much more than volunteering – it is a genuine cultural exchange and shared community experience. We believe that working together, sharing meals, conversations and everyday life creates the most meaningful human connections.
Although our professional work means that we spend part of our time in Budapest, we spend our weekends and part of the weekdays in Nagyszékely, where we are continuously building and developing our farm and community project. During these periods, volunteers live and work alongside us, becoming an active part of our daily rural life and our long-term vision.
Our volunteers can experience authentic Hungarian countryside life, learn about small-scale farming, gardening, animal care and sustainable living, while discovering local traditions and the rhythm of village life. Whenever possible, we also enjoy sharing Hungarian home cooking and family meals together.
As professional theatre artists and educators working in children's and youth talent development, we are happy to share our experience in theatre, creativity, community building and artistic projects. In the future, our farm will host summer camps, workshops and educational programmes where nature, environmental awareness, art and education come together.
At the same time, we are equally interested in learning from our guests. We love discovering different cultures, languages, traditions, music, recipes and stories, believing that every encounter enriches everyone involved.
For us, Workaway is not simply about receiving help on the farm—it is about building friendships, sharing knowledge and creating unforgettable experiences together as part of an international community. -
Help
At the moment, we are especially looking for volunteers who would like to help us prepare our farm and community space for next year's summer camps and educational programmes.
Our current priority is developing the garden, improving the outdoor areas, and creating the best possible environment for small-scale farming, children's activities, and sustainable living experiences.
We also welcome people who are interested in animal care and small-scale animal husbandry, and who would enjoy helping us create and maintain a healthy, safe, and enriching environment for our animals.
During the autumn and winter months, we are looking for volunteers who can stay for either a short or a longer period and assist with the daily care of the animals, feeding, cleaning, property maintenance, preparing firewood, and other seasonal farm tasks.
By joining us at this early stage, you will become part of a long-term community project that brings together nature, environmental education, sustainable farming, art, and rural community life in the Hungarian countryside.
All volunteer activities are strictly non-profit. Volunteers do not take part in any income-generating or commercial activities, either now or in the future. Their contribution is dedicated entirely to supporting the development of our educational and community spaces.
The farm and its community facilities are being developed by our non-profit association as a place where we will organize summer camps, workshops, educational programmes, and talent development activities for children and young people. Our demonstration garden will offer urban children the opportunity to discover the fundamentals of small-scale, sustainable farming through hands-on experiences, helping them develop a deeper understanding of nature, food production, and rural life. -
Languages
Languages spoken
Hungarian: Fluent
English: Intermediate
German: BeginnerThis host offers a language exchange
We enjoy meeting people from different countries and cultures and believe that language exchange is an important part of the Workaway experience. I speak English and am happy to communicate with our guests, while my husband currently speaks only a little English but is eager to improve and learn through everyday conversations and shared activities. We see this as a wonderful opportunity for mutual learning and cultural exchange. We are also happy to introduce volunteers to the Hungarian language, local traditions and everyday rural life, while learning about their languages, customs and cultures in return. We believe that sharing daily life, working together and eating together creates the best environment for meaningful language practice and new friendships. -
Accommodation
Volunteers stay in a charming countryside house converted from a traditional Hungarian wine press house, located in Cseperke Valley, a peaceful natural area where several local families also live.
The accommodation is located about a 15-minute walk from the farm, along a beautiful forest path, and it can also be easily reached by bicycle via a paved road.
The house has two levels:
the ground floor includes a kitchen and a living room,
the upper loft level has an open-plan bedroom, comfortably suitable for a couple or two friends travelling together.
The accommodation is simple, cosy and surrounded by nature, making it an ideal place for anyone who would like to escape city life and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the Hungarian countryside.
We provide the ingredients needed for daily meals whenever we are not in Nagyszékely, so volunteers can prepare their own food. When we are at the farm, we enjoy cooking and eating together, giving our guests the opportunity to experience home-cooked Hungarian meals and family life.
Our goal is to provide a warm, welcoming and inspiring environment where volunteers feel at home while experiencing authentic rural life in Hungary. -
What else ...
Nagyszékely is a peaceful and friendly village in Tolna County, Hungary, ideal for anyone who would like to escape the busy city life and experience the tranquillity of the Hungarian countryside.

The nearby forest is rich in wildlife, and it is common to see roe deer and other wild animals, while the sound of birds singing creates a truly magical atmosphere, especially in the early morning. Nature lovers will find this peaceful environment both inspiring and relaxing.
There are regular bus connections to the surrounding villages, making it easy to explore the local area by public transport. A thermal spa is located just 20 km away, offering a perfect place to relax and unwind on your days off.
By staying with us, volunteers will not only experience life on a small farm but will also enjoy the beauty of the Hungarian countryside, where nature, community and a slower pace of life create a truly special experience. -
