    Description

We are a small family (2 adults - Bart & Kate, 2 children - Frey is 2 yrs & Juniper is 6 yrs) and we operate a small-scale certified organic farm in the beautiful Yukon Territory about 40 minutes north of Whitehorse. Our products include vegetables, eggs, chicken, turkey, and pork. We incorporate agricultural practices of resiliency, sustainability, and community engagement. We sell our products through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA - Box Program), at a weekly farmer's market, and through local restaurants. We are a part of a dynamic farming community and have many friends doing very interesting work to build community.

Our family farm is off-grid, which means we have no electricity. We use propane for light and cooking and have a back-up generator and solar power to use when needed. We haul our water from a free-flowing well on the property. During the summer months and early fall, we eat from the garden and wild as much possible. The property we are on is 160 acres. We spend many of our summer nights around the fire and love to have fun with our friends!

The reason we farm is to build a better world through encouraging healthy soil, healthy people, and a healthy community.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

An experience of a lifetime - engaging in innovative agriculture in a quiet and natural setting. We always have other travellers staying at the farm and most everyone is very enthusiastic about being outside, working hard, and having fun!

Learning opportunities include gaining experience and a better understanding of organic farming in a northern/cold climate. You will also learn how to live off-grid and being at peace without the noise of a city. We have many connections throughout Whitehorse and can offer all sorts of connections and experiences depending on your interests. Although we speak english, we have many connections to the french community in Whitehorse.

We love food and are always eating! We love to be creative in the kitchen and eat foods from all over the world!

  • Help

    Help

We are looking for 2 types of people:

1/ Farm/garden help includes general gardening labour such as planting, weeding, and harvesting. This may also include some level of animal and livestock care if you are comfortable (with dogs, pigs, turkeys, and chickens) and can involve feeding, watering and moving mobile pens.

2/ Childcare includes an opportunity to hangout with 2 high-energy, fun and spirited children on the farm. Our kids spend most of their time on or around farm outside in the summer and love to be active, to be creative (crafts), and get along with all kinds of people.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have several types of rustic accommodation to choose from - there are 2 small trailers, a small traditional yurt, an old van and plenty of space for tent camping. There is a shared open air kitchen where lunch and dinner are usually shared. Everyone eats on their own schedule for breakfast. All food is provided as an exchange for your work. We use outhouses and have no bathing facilities on the farm but everyone has free access to the Takhini Hot Springs about 6 kilometres up the road from the farm. We have extra bikes for anyone's use and are often going to and from town (which is Whitehorse). There is a cute coffee shop up the road where you can use WiFi.

    What else ...

Time off activities include the many opportunities for hiking and canoeing the Yukon has to offer. Whitehorse has vibrant arts and music scene and there are many festivals all summer long. There are also many museums, restaurants, and a lot of friendly people.
