    Description

    Kaixo & Ciao!

We are a multicultural family of four: Matteo (Italian), Ane (Basque), and our two teenagers, Oihana (2007) and Asier (2010). We are easy-going people who enjoy the simple things in life—mountain walks, natural landscapes, and good chats over a glass of wine.

We live in a 300-year-old traditional Basque country house surrounded by nature, where we run a small, cozy guest house (Abatetxe, if you want to google it). We love welcoming people and sharing cultural exchanges!

Our home is a true peaceful retreat, tucked away in the mountains (1-hour walk or a 15-minute drive from the nearest village, but don't worry—we’ll happily pick you up at the train station!). Here, you’ll experience a genuine off-grid lifestyle: electricity powered entirely by solar panels and a wind turbine, spring water straight from the mountain, heating and from our firewood boiler.

We have 2 hectares of messy land that we are continuously shaping and caring for, which means there is always plenty of rewarding outdoor work. We grow our own organic vegetables in our "rustic" veggie garden and share our life with a lovely mix of animals: donkeys, hens, dogs, and cats.

At home, we mostly speak Basque and Italian, but we are also fluent in Spanish and English—making this a great place for language learning and cultural sharing.

If you are looking for a relaxing, authentic, and eco-friendly experience in nature with a warm family, this is the perfect place for you!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You will live in our house, share with us the everyday life, learn local culture.
We can share what we are learning about eco-farming and animal care.
You can learn the local language. You'll have spare time to visit our Country and to go to the beach/mountain. Have a look to The Official Tourism Website of the Basque Country to have an idea.

  • Help

    Help

We look for a person that could help us with the house chores (cleaning up, washing machine, etc..) / general maintenance / gardening (cutting grass, taking care of the veg garden).
We won't ask you to work with guests, just in our private house, in the garden and with animals...
You don't need to be a professional. We'll teach you how to do each task. but of course any of your relevant skills will be put to use!
Helping time: at least 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. There is no scheduling so we can plan the jobs together according to our needs and to your free-time plans.

Smoking not allowed inside the house.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We have no TV and limited WIFI but usually there is a good mobile phone coverage.
The house is quite isolated. It would be better if you have your own car, bike or good legs.
Our daughter is coeliac, so at home we always have gluten free food if you need.
We live in the heart of the Basque Country, at 40 minutes by car from the 3 main cities: Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria.
20min by car from the nearest beach (Deba).
